Suggestions for what Wasteland 2 should or could include.

Engine

Postby Wanderer » March 6th, 2012, 8:25 am

Greetings everyone. I have an idea for an engine that perhaps you could use for Wasteland 2 development. This new engine is made for tactical turn-based combat, it's isometric and it even supports destructible environments. It's made for a game called Xenonauts (spiritual successor to X-COM) which will be released later this year. I suppose that obtaining rights for using an engine like this, is still much less expensive and less time consuming than developing your own technology.

Here is an example of Alpha build gameplay:

This one is HD, but video is in German. Gameplay starts at 3 min:

I just wanted to share this, because like all of you, I've been waiting for a true Wasteland and Fallout sequel for many years...and now it may finally become a reality.

All the best and good luck!

With all due respect for Xeronauts, an Indie project that I love, I strongly hope that with significant funding (over$2M) the engine in Wasteland will be much more sophisticated. Valkyria Chronicles (just very dark an less 'anime', of course) or the next Xcom from Firaxis come to mind

The Jagged Alliance 2 engine is close to ideal.

Perhaps Torque3D? Chat to the guys at Iron Tower Studios and Double Bear about the changes/fixes they've been making to the engine for Age of Decadence and Dead State respectively and see if it'll work?

I don't know, I guess only the devs really know what they need from the engine, and it sounds like they want to make their own.

I think the game engine should be open gl and be 32 bit that way it could run on nay windows os from 98 to windows 8 and mac and linux and just about any console the xbox 360 is the only console that doesn't rn any form of open gl.

The new XCOM Enemy Unknown engine would work, especially if the W2 turns out to be squad based. The video I saw of the game had many cinematic looking camera dollying and cut scenes on action sequences. I'm not sure if this is what gameplay is like, but if so, the camera tricks can be cut out and the money that would be spent on cinematography should be reinvested in story or combat system development.

Why is anyone still running windows 98? And why would scarce development dollars be spent so that 117 people who still insist on running this system can play the game?

I think it would be best if they could make their own engine. Currently there's no suitable engine that would support turn based tactical combat AND complicated dialogue trees. Besides I'd rather see them making the TB combat the way they envision it and not according to some licensed engine limitations. Btw what happened with van buren engine?

Although the engine is important, I'd rather see them licensing one of the main available and spending more time on the story and development of the main character.

If the engine was designed solely for Van Buren then I think Bethesda would own it now.

Anyway, there's no reason to think that the engine would have aged well, or would have even worked well at the time.

Fargo could try to pull some strings to get the Onyx engine from Obsidian (at a discount if not for free). Dunno if it'd be worth it though.

By the way, what ever happened to this Troika engine:
