Educating New Fans On Wasteland

Let's help those out who may not be familiar with the Wasteland world, or may be only familiar with Fallout. What was Wasteland?!

Educating New Fans On Wasteland

So for those of us interested in the sequel but just a little too young to have played Wasteland 1 back in '88 do you suppose there could be a resource for new players on the forums? Personally I fall into this category and I have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic settings and RPG's but I find it pretty difficult to find information on the first games plot, story, artwork etc. I think it would be beneficial for new and old fans alike to have this put online and would no doubt help the Kickstart campaign too.

Did you check out the Wasteland wiki pages? I am not saying that this is the best way to learn about the game, but it would certainly give you some idea of what you are dealing with. But I completely agree with you, a "Wasteland A to Z" summary somewhere would be a pretty cool thing to see, particularly if someone involved with the game wrote it up and filled in things they know happened but that were not obvious from the game itself.

Thanks but that looks pretty dated. Would it still be a good resource?

It was already posted on some other topic but here we go again:

Roleplaying LP, done with Fallout background music and commentary. I highly recommend it.

EDIT: I edited the link to point to the right channel.

You could also play the actual game - that is what I am going to do when I have some free time. I have played all Fallout games except that Xbox title but I have never played Wasteland.

I'm glad you plan to play it. I keep seeing people say that it's too old, but I've been playing it again just as a reminder, and it's really not that difficult. It's no harder to play than a typical roguelike -- easier in some ways.

I tried playing it back when the 10 Year Interplay Anniversary Collection was released, but I got frustrated too easily with it and returned instead to my old favorite, "Dragon Wars", which I used to play on my dad's Commodore 64 when I was age 5 or 6.

However, after donating to the Kickstarter for this, I am definitely going to whip out the Collection again and play Wasteland for real this time.

On a personal note, I totally freaked out when I realized that Brian Fargo and his team were the common thread between ALL of my favorite PC RPGS over the years (Dragon Wars, IWD, Fallout, etc.)!! I can't believe I was ignorant of his involvement all of this time...

It's the interface. I think people are too used to using the mouse to play games. It's why I didn't get far in the game when I first played it, but having learnt the ropes of just using keyboard macros in my most recent playthrough, it's really, really very intuitive. Even in combat, eventually I just speed everything up and monitor the damage done to my party via the roster.
