[Bad Memory] Trapped in Finster's Mind Maze

Postby zebe » March 5th, 2012, 3:50 pm

On one playthrough long ago (on a PC/XT!), I made it to Finster's Mind Maze. For some reason lost to time, either because he was the only one with Cyborg Tech or too many of my other characters were badly injured, I ended up sending COVENANT (the NPC) as the one Ranger into the Maze.

This worked great until he got stuck somehow. I can't remember the exact details, but it was beyond the point of no return and I think it had to do with him being an NPC - couldn't control what he was doing, so he got killed. As a result I had to bail on the entire save. Couldn't finish the maze, couldn't get him out. Sucked.

Might have been the same place I got stuck, the section with all the arrow on the floor. I did finish the game with out doing the maze, but years later when the internet existed I finally found that you had to use the IQ attribute in a certain direction, I had never used any attributes throughout the game only skills.

Wow, this totally happened to me. I got trapped in the mind somehow and could not ever get out. That was the end of Wasteland for me. I never got around to playing it again as I would have had to start all over. I may have made attempts, but the next new game came along first I bet. I really missed finishing that game.

Thanks,
Duncan

On my first playthrough, I had the bright idea that laser pistols were more powerful than the assault rifle (because, you know... Lasers!!!), so the character that entered the mind maze was armed only with a laser pistol. I couldn't get him past the Finster Leviathan (I think that's what it was).

I remember there were multiple ways to solve Finster's puzzels, including LAW rockets, STR, and INT. But INT was the most useful.

That was one thing I was always a bit disappointed about in Wasteland - I always wanted to load up my party with high levels of skills like forgery, bomb disarm, alarm disarm, picklock, metallurgy, etc. But these skills were mostly not used. Bomb and alarm disarm each had a small handful of locations you could use them, but the benefits weren't nearly worth the skill points it took to get them up. Metallurgy had like that one cave where you could get some minerals or something. Picking locks was ok except that you could use use STR or an explosive. I think I may have found one place in the game to use forgery, but I don't remember.

However, the more basic and boring stuff like perception and climb were invaluable and the game was nearly unplayable without them. And so often you could just use an attribute, like INT or STR or CHR, to solve a problem at no cost.

Really? Picklock and Bomb Disarm was immensely useful. For one, picking locks doesn't consume resources. Also, there were plenty of bombs that could be disarmed, and doing so almost always gave you a nice reward. Alarm disarm and Metallurgy were pretty useless, yes, but many other skills had somewhat hidden uses. Like the fact that you could use Forgery against the Webs of Deceit and it was a lot easier than trying to get through with IQ or STR.

I agree I use PICKLOCK about 300 times. in the course of a game. I don't think NPCs are any different than PCs I've complete Finster with NPCS
