Lets think of some 90s jokes

Postby J1811 » June 24th, 2012, 6:58 pm

A really bad 90s internet with geocities websites, lots of animated gifs and annoying midis playing

Extremely sugary soda/juice drinks full of crazy additives. I even remember a "candy spray", we would literally spray it into our mouths. With so much sugar perhaps this stuff would last past the apocalypse, to burn away the teeth of survivors (since they have no dental care).

Leather pants

Use of the phrases "as if", "talk to the hand", "da bomb"

The 90s was full of failed soft drinks experiments. Perhaps there could be a cola brand where the "original" flavour is extremely rare and sort after. While the wasteland is full of untouched "special editions" which are crap in their various ways.

The word "fruit" could of become synonymous with hoards of sugary snacks, which taste like fruit but with very little vitamins or nutrients. Fruit By The Foot, Fruit Roll-ups, Fruit Gushers and so on.

Super soaker: Perhaps this could have a use if ammo for real guns is scarce, just fill it with acid.

Home Alone: There could be a quest to kidnap a boy home alone in his house. But every entrace you take has a number of ridiculus and unrealistic traps.

Terrible console addons: If theres something like the pipboy in wasteland, there could be a very rare/expensive addon called "pip boy CD/32X". All this does once you get it is accompany certain maps with really tacky low-resolution FM sequences.

I doubt much internet will be remaining.

Extremely sugary soda/juice drinks full of crazy additives.

Heh. That's hardly a 90s thing. Jolt came out in 1985, after all.

Leather pants

Ever seen 80's hair metal?

Use of the phrases "as if", "talk to the hand", "da bomb"

Well, there's plenty of unique slang from the 90's, but while the bombs fell in this forked version of 1998, it's still close to 90 years later. I wager language would have evolved quite a bit. Perhaps a cult dedicated to The Old Language could work, but I think keying them to 80's Valley Girls would be funnier.

Fruit By The Foot, Fruit Roll-ups, Fruit Gushers and so on.

Fruit Roll-up's were 1983. Can't find a date for Fruit Gushers, but I remember "juice" filled bubble gum back in the mid-80s, and gummies are easily as old. I wouldn't consider fruit snacks to be quintessentially 90s.

Super soaker: Perhaps this could have a use if ammo for real guns is scarce, just fill it with acid.

I don't think a plastic toy would react well to being filled with acid.

Home Alone: There could be a quest to kidnap a boy home alone in his house. But every entrace you take has a number of ridiculus and unrealistic traps.

Ugh, no. I'd like to avoid blatant references like that. Was "subtle" removed from the dictionary while I wasn't looking?

Terrible console addons: If theres something like the pipboy in wasteland, there could be a very rare/expensive addon called "pip boy CD/32X". All this does once you get it is accompany certain maps with really tacky low-resolution FM sequences.

I hope there's no Pipboy. That's a Fallout thing. And most electronics probably wouldn't be doing so well. While electricity isn't terribly uncommon in Wasteland (they had enough to power a jukebox in Scott's Bar, after all), I would think most consoles would be too fragile to survive.

Yes, I grew up in the nineties. I have the Eve 6 and Harvey Danger Albums to prove it too.

That being said I think some obscure references are fine. Bear in mind, that a lot of folks didn't grow up in the nineties or they were booger gobblers through that decades entirety. Referential humor can be funny but it's lost on someone that didn't grow up with it, or someone versed in it. IE I collect Bloom County and Outland cartoon collections by Berkley Breathed. They were very topical and telling of the eighties into the nineties and I understood them because I spent a lot of time quite interested in the going ons of the first decade and truly became aware of the world around me in the second. A friend of mine feels they're stupid and useless, having no knowledge of those times. Try reading an old Doonesbury and being unaware of the politics and political figures of the time. It's going to baffle the ever loving hell out of you.

That being said, and this was not meant as a rant, keep it within certain bounds.

I have one personal request...a copy of the Rolling Stones Magazine with the article entitled, "Hootie and the Blowfish: How Ten Million People Can be wrong." Or something to that extent that involves no copyright, perhaps a spoof.

Also, a fishy smelling cigar or cocktail dress with a mysterious stain.

Now that my mind is racing...how about finding an old 486 with a plaque saying, "Really people, it's all the computer you're ever going to need." Signed Bill G.?

A trio of long haired, androgynous males, going Ooom-Bop repeatedly?

A truck full of sweater vests.

A new wave club still playing the Macarena..."You're disgusted but you feel compelled to join in." Yeah, unlikely to happen due to copyright, but still, I hated that fucking song, still do.

A guy with a blatant American accent who thinks he's Robin Hood...yes, I hate you Kevin Costner. Come on, even Christian freaking Slater had an english accent in that film.

It's sick, wrong, and perverse, but I would love to see a shotgun with 'Cobain' scribbled across it. And to be extra bad, have it do bonus damage on head shots.

Plastic can store acid fine. In some cases it's actually preferred instead of glass.

To dissolve plastic you'd need an organic solvent like DCM. I spilled some of that on a plastic pen once and it melted away in seconds at room temperature. But organic solvents aren't nearly as harmful to humans as conc acid.

I agree with that. I was thinking more of parodying bad console addons by referencing it in rangers tek.

Be that as it may, they're not famous because of it.

A friend of mine bought one of those [back then], drank about a third of it, then threw it away; said his heart hurt.

What they need is a viral AI taking over robots and hardened mainframes ~and have him reminiscent of Max Headroom.

Graffiti in an old municipal building that reads "The Bomb beat Windows '95 to market".

Don't temp the devs with this sort of sadistic behavior, they may adopt it.

To tempt would not be 'mmm Bop', it would be 'Stop the Pigeon' or 'Daddy would you like some sausage'.

1. Talk To Me Elmo and Furbies they can be considered high technology in the wasteland.
2. A run in with Tank Girl or Judge Dredd.
For the sake of enjoying a game you guys seem to have too much knowledge of too many things.

No.

Just...NO.

Here's some 90's and 80's Finnish tv ads. I know WL2 is in US and A, but I thought some people might be interested to see some 90's/80's stuff from around the world. I've (horribly) translated the best ads from those videos and can translate some more if you want to.

90's!

0:43 "I've never drunk milk, and never will." Text: We can see that (not really good translation, but you get the idea). Drink milk

1:10 I won't translate the song, but here's translation fo what that girl said "Every time I get Chap I need to party hard!"

3:01 "Do you want this with muna*?" "no, I'll pay it with cash!" *Muna in finnish can mean either "egg" or "dick". What she said can be understood two ways: 1. Do you want this with egg and 2. Do you want to pay in nature?

3:40 "This kind of package your lady had order for herself. There you go" Translation of text that appears: There's no gadget that post won't deliver.

4:20 "Goddamn IKEA"

80's

4:10 "Seems like the girl knows there's some patukka* to be had behind the wall" Patukka can translate as "baton", "(chocolate)bar" or "dick"

You could always bring back that old east coast / west coast gangster rap battle between tupac and biggie smalls. Maybe have two warring factions that worship them like gods or something. The cult of pac and the followers of biggie.
