Windows-friendly copy of Wasteland 1

Postby Mkoda » June 15th, 2012, 10:12 pm

A windows friendly copy of the original game. Really, it'd make my day and a lot of other days. You might even make Dirty Harry's day and he's been waiting for someone to do that for a LOOOOONG time.
If you're not moving you should be shooting, if you're not shooting you should be reloading, if you're not moving, shooting, or reloading someone is going to cut off your head and put it on a stick-Clint Smith Thunder Ranch

That's where DOSBox comes in.

Well, I know how to use Dosbox and this is no longer a requisite as I found a legit copy of the game again...amazing how well you remember Dos after a decade of not using it. I just assumed that if you're going to bundle a classic game with another game you'd do what GOG does. I know how to use Dosbox but why go through the work if you don't have to do so? Yes, I am that lazy.

Well, guess what GOG do: They deliver the game with DOSBox and a batch file to run it with the proper configs, so all they do is spare you from googling for the right config, which is not much time saved, just time spent differently :) .

This is unfortunately an EA decision. I think on the KS page you'll see that inXile would if they could, so perhaps there'll be a sudden relenting closer to release. If not, the Interplay 10th Anniversary CD-ROM is easily found. That's how I rebought my copy in the 90s as the 5.25" floppy drive was dead and hard to replace.

Bingo. EA has the rights to publishing the game, and are not keen to re-release it (EA being EA I'm sure). Unfortunately the only way to find working copy now it would seem is to pay a visit to your friendly neighborhood torrent tracker.
All I know is that I know nothing.

EA has done quite a lot with GoG.com, I really hope they move onward with Wasteland too...

I know that it's ultimately up to EA, hell I've even considered trying to get a petition going amongst we few fans of the game...somehow I just think 11.5 names-one of them is under five feet tall hence the .5-isn't going to wow them into submission.

I've also thought about sending them love letters, dirty articles of clothing, animals my dog has killed, animals that I've killed, and a rather nice sock puppet named Mimsy. Somehow, common sense has told me none of the suggested ideas are going to work either.

Yes, I know GOG games run off of Dosbox but the nice part is that I don't have to open up and run Dosbox. Yes, I know this makes be a lazy bastard; however, when you're fighting the Dude in the competition for the laziest man in the world you have to take drastic measures. Some people I know were gleeful the first time they used Dosbox, even excited, it just reminded me how much Dos sucked the proverbial donkey dick. I used it frequently and often, I still remember how to use it, just prefer not to.

did they mention an editor for wl2?
if it's a mod friendly game then there could be, at some point, a retrofit of the original as a mod for wl2.

Exactly. Hopefully they'll re-release it through GOG/Origin/Steam. Maybe launch it in a bundle with Wasteland 2? Sounds like an easy way for them to make money *and* would also be appreciated by the fans.

There are lots of frontends you can use to avoid DOSbox command prompts. Try DosShell for example, or D-Fend Reloaded.

You can set up a shortcut that starts Dosbox and loads your game. That's what gog does for you.

Great. It seems I won't be playing WL2 at launch.

I was able to run Rayman 1 with zero knowledge of DosBox, and since the first Wasteland will look like crap after try Wasteland 2 (i kinda hope so). i'll try to get the first game before the second is released.

I wonder if they'll be able to release it to preorderers BEFORE Wasteland 2. I mean, licensing/legal issues aside, why wouldn't they?

On his Twitter page, Brian says they can't release it prior, it is going to be bundled with it.
He also says there are no conditions related to Origin
