Fanservice

What needs to be avoided in the sequel?

I see the blatant misogyny topic isn't dead yet.
If a game is moddable it will have its first nude patch in a week after release. If it isn't moddable, mod tools will be created to make a nude patch. This is like the bastard child of rule 34.
Moving on...?

Hey, it really depends on the situation, but I agree it should not be blatant pandering of any sort.

I would expect everyone on my team to be properly dressed and armoured, for sake of realism and the fact that there will be combat and that the desert sun hates exposed skin.

But when you arrive in some run-down place and there are hookers there, well then you would expect them to be dressed in "lighter" garments. But don't expect them to be all attractive.

Also, there is nothing wrong with making some female characters be more attractive. In real world women (and men too, lets not be silly about this) try to make themselves look better, regardless of their social standing and situation. So if they have
something like a fashionable scarf, or torn, yet niely-fitting trousers or even nicely done hair it should not be too out of place as long as you make it look like it fits.

I think this will be said a hundred times but it won't hurt to say it now and again: its ok if its in moderation and you think about it properly.

my vote is for combat oriented women to look just as mean and badass as their manly counterparts.

Throw in fan service in the form of post-apocolyptic night clubs, strip clubs etc.

And don't forget to include the male strippers as well. As long as they're isolated in different rooms so the player can choose manly strippers or female strippers that'd be great!

Also I hope to see several different body types for women. Most games tend to have 3 body types: manly man, overweight/unfit man, generic woman.

It'd be nice if you had a pornstar model vs. a "regular woman" kind of model...

I realize it makes sense for us nerdy types to be somewhat lacking in knowledge about the outdoors but I sure hope you are never stranded out in the heat. Wearing skimpy clothes is generally the wrong thing to do.

Take note of the clothes typically worn by people who live in very hot environments, like the
Bedouins. They cover their entire body. Covering the body prevents sweat, vital for cooling our bodies, from dissipating too quickly and keeps hot air off the skin, which would otherwise raise (rather than lower) the body's temperature. It also prevents sunburn. As a modern example, smart motorcyclists don't head into the desert with less clothing than they normally wear - they cover every part of their body with clothing that the wind can't pass through (no mesh jackets, thank you!), for just those reasons.

Some people living in hot conditions have worn minimal clothing but typically people have chosen loose clothing that covered as much as possible.

I'm not an expert but I believe it also depends on the humidity. People that wear full body coverings in the heat are usually in a very dry environment. That's the kind of heat that doesn't feel very bad until it gets very high and then getting the sun off of you is the main concern. In places that are more humid, even 90 degrees can feel horrible. At that point it's more of a heat that surrounds you and the sun isn't the worst of it. I live in Maryland and I do roofing, so in the summer it's me, on top of a roof, with a torch under me. Even without the torch if I would add more clothing I think I would heat stroke. I typically work in a t-shirt but there have been some summers spent mostly shirtless.

Now I don't actually know what California is like so that might be something they have to take into consideration. Based on the amount of bikinis you seeing in movies and tv shows though, it seems like a place that would dress even more casually if social standards lowered.

I can see raiders and the like wearing more skimpy outfits, if for nothing more than because they can. Anyone who is suppose to be well trained though should have very gender neutral armoring. An armor smith pointed out that most female fantasy armor is a joke, because no real smith would create a chest plate that had built in breasts. The curves would guide a sword or arrow straight to the heart, literally a fatal flaw.

Off topic but note worthy, sci-fi games with space suits that are very tight fitting and more provocative (think Evangelion or Mass Effect) are more realistic. Apparently in the future they expect that most space suits will be very form fitting like that, something about being able to handle compression and other elements needed in a space suit easier. Pretty much just like how scuba gear evolved from the hulking brass, big daddy looking things to what they are now.

One of the effects of a nuclear war is ozone depletion. That means faster sunburns and more skin cancer. So topless farmer's daughters, and skimpy outfits for raider chics would be suicidal.

I would have to cast my vote for the moderation aspect. I don't have a problem with skimpy outfits in general in video games. My real concern with the female-armor issue is when every piece of armor in the game magically transforms into a bikini when placed on a female, despite the fact that it had previously been a full-scale piece of plate armor for Jim over there, just a moment ago.

As a female gamer, the message of "we would rather you be attractive than protected" is a little off-putting. However, that doesn't mean we can't appreciate armor for its aesthetic quality as well. I know many gamers (male and female) who enjoy dressing up their chars, or enjoy using chars for their purely aesthetic qualities, so to eliminate the attractive option entirely is a little bland.

Realistically, not everyone chooses to wear an outfit that is purely practical, so wearing a skimpy outfit can be suitable to a character's personality. Just don't put every woman in a bikini, lol.

They can now. Do the vast majority choose to?

Currently, shooting guns is a hobby. It's not really a necessity to modern survival. I think a better analogy would be that cars today are as important as guns in the Wasteland. Sure, you *can* get by without one, but it's a damn hassle and at least moderate proficiency with one is expected out of any member of our society.

Those who grow up with a reason to be proficient in a skill will usually do so. In a world like the Wasteland, failing to acquire proficiency in some form of weapon would be foolish. Firearms are the easiest weapon to become proficient in*, so would likely be the weapon of choice.

Also, I can attest to the very dry heat of the American Southwest. It's much more tolerable than the American Southeast, provided you have water to drink. I assume the same would hold true, except that the water might be a teensy bit more irradiated in the scenario of Wasteland.

*Compare how long it takes you to get a consistent bulls-eye on a 50-yard target with a bow and arrow or atlatl or sling to how long it takes you to hit that with a bullet. Or compare how long it takes to ensure a killing blow with a knife or pointy stick to how long it takes to ensure a killing shot from a firearm.

I don't oppose to optional or occasional fanservice but as a female player I want to play as a female and talk to female characters who don't look and act like hookers.

I mean, Fallout 2 was great and fanservice often served for lulz there however it lacked for more serious, prominent female NPCs who achieve things by something else than offering sex (e.g. godfather's wife).

I get irked by these threads, you have over the top reactions either way. Everything from full dressed to scantly clan exists, learn that there is a middle ground between the two extremes. It is shameful that people want to repress their sexuality to the point where it is "wrong" to admit it. I might go out on a limb here, but in a hot climate people are gonna be less dressed. in the cold. more. Go check out old school post apocalyptic movies like a boy and his dog, any mad max, or the really horrible 1970s ones. Tank girl is also fun for Punk infusion. long story short. Anything, including sexuality, can be made gaudy and ugly. It is getting it right, not oppressing it, that is important. if you cant handle that, well...hey. go wear power armor.

I feel that this thread although good for philosophical implications in video games, is still a moot point. Considering the fact that Wasteland 2 will have modding kits available, people are going to create skimpy clothing mods that would cater to those that want the fanservice. So honestly, it doesn't really matter now does it?

That being said, assuming that we take Wasteland as is without the modifications, wouldn't it make sense that people would try to scrounge up any material or clothes to wear in a post-apoc world? I wouldn't be surprised if I found men or women fully clothed to be wearing thongs or bikinis underneath because that's what they happened to find out in the wastes. Not to mention if you didn't have any clothes on it's usually because you're doing a daily ritual (ie. showering) or that you don't have clothes. Sometimes thinking simplistically is best, especially when you have to consider an economy with what I'm assuming is going to barter with used products in circulation. Unless the textile industry is still functioning I doubt people are making enough new clothes to off set the amount of clothes that are rendered too worn out for use.

As a result I think that InXile would go for the middle path. Some individuals are fortunate to still have decent clothing to wear whereas some would be going the 'fanservice' route due to their rather bleak situation regardless of their gender. If you have no clothes, then naked is the way to go.

Nude patch can be countered by putting some old and ugly women in the game.

I'm pretty sure the game will have at least ONE night club/ stripper bar. That's all it needs honestly.
