IMO that's not what the article says. Isometric isn't mentioned once, cut down to relevant parts:
The original Wasteland was ... with a top-down POV...
...
The top down POV would remain as well but we would go with a full 3D render to bring it into the modern graphics era.
...
Given the top down POV and camera height required to show a party of characters and enemies, it would be overkill to spend too much of our resources on detailed character models and all the cutting-edge rendering and animation techniques associated with that level of detail.
...
If we plan well, then we can put just the right amount of resources into modeling and animation so that it looks great from our camera POV without wasting effort on detail that will never be seen.  Then we can spend more time working on other enhancing effects that will be noticed from or POV

It reads to me like we won't see much detail for characters beyond paper doll, scalp/hat + a gun barrel and perhaps a bit sideways view via perspective depth or flying ragdolls(said later on in the article) from explosions.

Reading all interviews up to this point makes it quite clear that they aim to have isometric view. They have actually stated it at some point prior to this update. They also seem to count isometric into "top-down view".

They've stated it before. It will be isometric, with limited if any movement of the camera, though quite possibly zoom, and the camera drawn up higher than Fallout's was by default.

This post was about the engine, not the camera. They've talked about that before (in the Q&A video) and will give us more details or even examples when the vision doc comes around, hopefully within a few weeks.

I think PSN downloadable Dead Nation comes pretty close to what we can expect:

I think that looks more than enough for Wasteland 2. If they start closing in on that quality I'd prefer if they added more diversity (more objects/textures, more gear being visible on characters, weather effects etc) instead of focusing on better quality (more detail to textures/objects and such)

Backers-only forum? No. Not yet, anyway. It's an option for the future but not something inXile wanted to jump right into. It'll happen when the beta happens, for sure, perhaps before.

Brian Fargo (on Twitter) :
"Yes Wasteland 2 will be using the #Unity4 engine. Note the mention of #Linux support in their announcement."

I was just reading up on Unity 4. A lot of interesting and streamlined features in 4, they are calling it a "AAA" engine for indie companies. Now I'm looking forward to seeing some screenshots and the game in action even more than before.

If anyone is interested in learning more here is a nice summary on Ars Technica:

I'm really excited that you inXile picked Unity -- I've been working with it for several years and it's a fantastic engine run by a fantastic company.

If anyone still has their doubts about Unity 4's capabilities, check out this video rendered in realtime on an i7 and 680GTX called The Butterfly Effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hucBB7mlv0Y

It's a good engine, but doesn't compete with Cry or Unreal engines though (unlike what I've read in some article), and I still think the Unigine is a bit more powerful graphically.
But who cares, this game doesn't need high-end technologies, as long as it is decent, the art prevails... :)
