Fired up Wasteland today...

Postby The Tallest » May 7th, 2012, 9:57 am

So, my Interplay's 10 Year Anthology arrived from Canada today and I installed the "Loonies" emulator for DosBox and decided to fire up Wasteland.

I managed to kill my entire party in 20 minutes. First, we got stuck in the Colorado River. Then we managed to wander into Mine Shaft and found the locked room to the southwestwhich we promptly bashed the door in and found a chest with some loot; rope and gas masks. We had to fight a myriad of baddies, cave critters, and a few others. As we were leaving the room we encountered a Shadowclaw. A loot bag spawned but I was dead before I could even open it. :(

It ate our heads. I died.

LOL...man, I missed this game. I need to print out the Wasteland Survival Guide so that I can actually reference it as I play.

Sounds about par for the course!

Silly Tallest. Start in Highpool and then go to the Ag Center. Swimming is for advanced characters!

Lol yeah, I was in Highpool but since it's been so long since I played I couldn't remember where Bobby's dog Rex was, ao I meandered my way to Mine Shaft thinking Jackie and Rex were there. That's where my party died was in that little room with the chest. I managed to kill everything in the room but when I went over to the loot bag that spawned a Shadowclaw appeared on it. Since I only had two members of my party left they were quickly killed.

I restarted and am now at the AG Center, again, bypassing Highpool. I'm probably going to start over today with new characters or my own design instead of the vanilla ones.

You know what's funny is that I find myself doing exactly what I did as a kid. Oh, and my wife walked in the door yesterday afternoon to me playing The Bard's Tale and she said, 'These games are ancient.' to which I replied, 'Yeah, and they are awesome.'

Tsk. The pump room in Highpool has some free loot in it (with a Perception check) that would be helpful.

You need $500 to buy an engine from the nomads before you'll get anything out of the pump room.

Incorrect. There's loot under the bed.

Actually, there's a nice little cache in the pump room that, if I'm remembering correctly, is 1 VP, 1 Jewelery, X 9mm clips and X cash that usually comes to about 100 odd bucks.

That's under a floorboard.

Depends on your perception check. you either get what's under the bed or what's under the floor.

High Luck character in slot 1 with Perception will find the floorboards cache.

If I'm remembering correctly.

I got the stuff under the bed. I forgot the PC's slot order mattered. Damn. I've been selling everything I find if I know I'm not going to need it but still don't have enough money for the engine for the pump room.

Usually, after becoming aware of the broken water purifier, head for Agriculture Center... BEFORE "offering to help", check the 'loot' in the other 2 enclosures... 15 'Fruit' which can be sold at Highpool for money for the 'Engine'. Installing Engine gets you 'loot' worth about $800... including 4 Leather Jackets, Jewelry, & Cash.

That's right. I forgot about that method of cash acquisition. Usually, before taking on Harry, I'd find some way to get M19s or M17s and adequate ammo for them. Harry's got a lot of hit points for a foe that early in the game AND he does quite a bit of damage to boot. Faster the kill the better, thus, the rifles/carbines and the Mangler from Highpool.

I took Harry down with whatever weapons I started the game with. It was tough, lots of turns spent healing and running. But we took him down. I haven't played it in a few weeks though. Got sucked into Metro2033 and Batman Arkham City.
