What do we know thus far

Postby Woolfe » May 7th, 2012, 4:50 pm

I know it is still early days, but what have we Discerned from the interviews etc thus far.

1 - Combat is going to be different from WL, closer to FO. More tactical, but also attempting to keep it from becoming onerous
2 - Overland is still going to be at a high level, and will zoom in when in "smaller" spaces (cities etc) or combat. This will keep the exploration and discovery of the original game.
3 - Setting up the Ranger Base. Somehow the player will be involved in this
4 - Party based - Almost certainly 4 PC + 3 NPC
5 - Turn based
6 - Bobby is alive and apparently pissed. (Other WL1 characters will also likely make an appearance)
7 - Start in old WL area, move to new region.
8 - Gear degredation (Weapons specificially)

9 - Scavenging and resource management (water in particular)
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2099&p=40988#p40988
10 - Single player, not Multiplayer
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2105&p=40990#p40990
11 - Items that act on Skills - No Minigame skills
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1285&p=40305#p40305
12 - Device Agnostic (if possible)
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2067&p=41005#p41005
13 - Unlimited saves and hopes to be able to implement an ironman mode. Also Named Saves
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1042&start=500#p41043
14 - Unity Engine - Windows, Mac and Linux support
15 - Toaster Repair will be in the game in some form or another

What else?

In addition to Bobby, other characters form Wasteland will be making an appearance. I get the Impression Faran Brygo will be one of them at least.
The biggest failure in the recent past is this assumption that the audience is not smart.Too much effort is being spent making it dummy proof..all the clues are being held right in front of their nose. The exploration and journey is the reward

It's worth keeping in mind that there won't be a separate "combat map".

Shouldnt the combat map if any identically reflect surroundings like fo.
No difference tween reg and combat maps cause they are same map.
Except in random desert encounters, this needs a combat map i suspect. Or can keep random encounters like the whole combat of wl was. Single screen no movement description whats happening.
I dunno. but def need a combat map for coming out of overworld in random encounters now thinking bout it.

Nothing is completely set in stone yet, except the obvious.
* it will be a sequel to wwsteland.

I think the theory is it zooms into a close view of the map if you are in the overland view and get involved in combat/encounter. At which point I guess more detail becomes available etc.

I'm pretty sure these are set in stone:
Party-based, you have more than one PC.
Party NPCs are not fully controllable.
Combat will not be real-time (turn-based, which can also possibly mean phase-based).
You play Desert Rangers.
You go to California because of word about the Guardians.

After reading an InXile comment on gear degradation, it seems very likely that they're going to have a system for this.

EDIT: Now that I read it again, they're actually saying they are going to have weapon wear.

DarkTwinkie wrote:We think the concept of using water as a resource is a great idea, especially given the zone and concept of the Wasteland. One core principle of the game is scavenging so making sure the team has what they need to travel is important. With a lack of proper water delivery systems in place, this could play a big role. Thanks for the ideas!

Also suggests that Water at least will be a resource and that there will be some degree of "resource management".

I hope it is also aimed to "not be tedious".

It’s pretty clear a lot of people cherish an unlimited save-anytime system. We will definitely have that.

Toaster Repair is going to be included in some form or another, as an homage to the original.

Due to boredom, and a lack of news on the Wasteland 2 front, I'm going to bump this topic to include a few observations from the alpha gameplay demo. I'm going to leave out obvious stuff like action point system (if someone else wants to include it feel free) and focus on things that may interest those who did not play the first game. Hopefully a few other posters can chime in to create some additional discussion.

*Snake Vargas (A pre-made character from the original) is now in charge of the Desert Rangers)

*Bobby (An NPC whose dog was killed by the Rangers) appears to be a member/founder? of the Red Skorpions.

*The mention of Citadel Base, would seem to indicate that the Guardian Citadel (a home to xenophobic religious nuts) has now been occupied by the Desert Rangers.

*Russian radio chatter would seem to indicate that they are on U.S soil (assuming that Ranger radio does pick transmission in Russia) A potential Russian invasion was mentioned in the Wasteland manual, but it never occurred. Could these transmissions be a prelude to such an invasion in Wasteland 2?

It's just been released as flavor text, but they seem to be heavily implying that Angela Deth is still kicking around, possible as a retired Ranger. Maybe we'll meet her in Quartz.
