Missle Silo Base - Vote

Postby newyawk » April 30th, 2012, 6:17 am

I posted this up on Google Mod for a vote. Someone else had mentioned a base inside of an actual missle but that didnt seem to work unless it was pygmy radioactive hobbits. This seems like it would fit right in though:

<<"http://cultureandcommunication.org/deadmedia/index.php/Underground_Missile_SiloThis was mentioned in another post but a town or base inside of an unlaunched silo instead of the missle itself. Check that thing out, it is massive">>

There are underground missile bases all over the US...hell...you could convert a single Titan 1 silo into 18 9ft tall 2,800sq.ft. (30ft radius subtracting some room for a elevator serving all floors) apartments. That's enough room for a family of 4 that only sees each other at mealtimes. And that's just in a modified silo...(of which it has 3) the Titan 1 underground complex itself has roughly 45,000 sq.ft. of floorspace in the command center, generator room, comm center, and corridors (12ft wide corridor is plenty room for small shops and lean-tos). Wasteland conditions would probably require more crowding...so say cram in 10-15 people per floor in the apartments (still plenty of room...almost luxury) and only have kitchen/bathroom facilities in a refitted command center...Now we're talking a thriving community 500+ strong, with room to expand...as well as acres of surface covered in bolt-holes leading back underground!

It also fits in the area...there were 6 Titan 1's in Denver, Clorodo alone, and the Southwest was just littered with them andthe smaller Atlas sites. you can check floorplans for them here: http://www.chromehooves.net/missile_silos.htm
and see the locations here:
http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/hm/titanmissiles.htm

And yes...people in real life actually buy these decommissioned sites and refit them as safety shelters just like I said.

Considering those Titan silos (as well as the Atlas silos) were all decommissioned by the 1970s, it would be completely plausible if they had some sort of survivalist community (now 5 generations after the bomb) living in such a community.

In fact, considering what those silos were built to withstand...well, if some 'eccentric' man or woman of means in the world of Wasteland bought a decommissioned silo complex and then had it completely renovated to specs like you mentioned for the express purpose of creating the ultimate survivalist retreat (with accommodations for family and staff etc...) that could be a very interesting little society there.

Atlas silo complexes were smaller, but would still make for great retreats.

But why stop there?

Survivors of the war could have stumbled on Minuteman and Peacekeeper launch complexes that may have been missed by Soviet missiles and built similar complexes to house other survivors and form communities in the 100 or so years since the war.

I like this idea.

And for the record, newyawk, no Titan launch complexes in New York BUT...there were Atlas launch complexes in New York, if you don't mind living around the Adirondacks and Platsburgh areas.

yeah...the resell on the things is ridiculous...they probably really did buy them at gov't auction for $1...and then just turn around and go "$2 million!" An old house in my town sold for $15 at parish auction.

I just watched an episode of Discovery series Doomsday Preppers. It's about people prepping for different kind of apocalypses. In this episode was this contractor who spent his spare time converting one of those missile silos into a 15 story underground complex. He then sold the apartments to rich folks who wanted a safe house in a possible society collapse.

It had room of somewhat 70 people, its own store, water supply etc. Outside was a perimeter fence and camera surveillance. I instantly thought of this thread when I saw it! :D Although it was only made to self-sustain for a couple of months, I can easily see how one of those survived the apocalypse and was now used by a smaller society as a safe haven.

It is a sound idea. Assuming the silos were not flooded over time as does happen to most of them.

California does have several former Titan and Atlas missile silos at Vandenberg Air Force Base. As well as 3 more former Titan missile silos north of Sacremento.

There are also underground coastal defense batteries in San Francisco and San Pedro.

Santa Ana is also home to Fremont Elementary School, which was built underground in 1973. The school's playground is actually on the roof.

Additionally, there are a number of former AT&T Communication Bunkers all over the state. Including one near Barstow which was purchased by vivos so they could sell bunker space to gullible suckers.

There are also the Tunnels to Nowhere located in the mountains just East of Los Angeles. Some large concrete tunnels that were started in the 1960's but never completed.

As a side note, there are also various interesting museum ships in California.
San Diego has a Soviet Submarine, the USS Midway and USS Dolphin. It is also home to Coronado Naval Base.

Long Beach Harbor has another Soviet Submarine and the RMS Queen Mary.

San Francisco has the USS Hornet, USS Red Oak Victory, USS Pampanito, various other vessels kept as part of the Mothball Fleet. It also has Alcatraz Island, one underground tunnel (Yerba Buena Island Tunnel) and one underwater tunnel (Posey / Webster Tube Tunnel).

All of those places, with the exception of Vandenberg AFB and Coronado, sound like great ideas.

Vandenberg and Coronado would be first strike targets. Vandenberg is currently home to the United States' second largest space launch complex AND a Minuteman ICBM launch complex. Back when the game was made, she was home to MX missiles. (Or, in game, MX 2 missiles...)

Coronado's home to the USN Pacific Command.

In the event of a full blown nuclear exchange between the U.S. and Soviets: Those two are gone QUICKLY.

If the devs ratchet down the contamination probability, the areas may not still be 'sunny' and may even be accessible...but there isn't going to be much 'there' there.

Of course, being a work of fiction, they could always say the missiles that would have hit Vandenberg or Coronado 'missed' or perhaps, in the case of Vandenberg, it could, astonishingly, look like the place never even got a whiff of an incoming nuke, which, of course, would raise some very interesting questions with some potentially VERY interesting answers...
