Just to be clear. I'm against having snipers as random encounters. A pre-planned scenario or two where the player group is not the initial target (hence not being shot first) I am perfectly fine with.

I like the idea of a sniper at least for a random encounter. It's an RPG, so I could imagine someone is hit in a random random limb and down to X Hitpoint with loosing blood every turn. The game than would start in cover, one stays back to heal, the others approach the sniper. Maybe there is a tunnel somewhere, maybe you could even talk the sniper out of his/her shooting.

I don't know why a fight against a sniper couldn't be fun. I mean, we have a Scorpitron on the other hand have we?

Yeah, but the Scorpitron was right there in the open. You could see it and shoot back the second you encountered it.

From a realistic point it's as unlikely to survive such an encounter as facing a sniper. But it's a game, so I would neither think of realistic 200-1000m nor a direct take out. It's less fun if all the fights would play identical, a sniper would make a nice variation but should stay something special for random encounter or boss.
