Don't break the 4th wall

What needs to be avoided in the sequel?

Don't break the 4th wall

I didn't care for it in Fallout 2.

As long as it's funny, why not?

What about the original Wasteland with the Wasteland 2 reference?

A couple of subtle jabs at the 4th wall wouldn't be an issue for me. But I too would prefer not to see any large-scale breaking of the 4th wall.

It'd be funnier if it broke the wrong fourth wall, though not by much. "I feel like I stepped into a bloody comic book!"

But, yeah, unless the character's drugged or something, I'm not sure this is a way to go with the humor in the game, unless it's subtle, or (again), the wrong fourth wall.

What's wrong with your toons yelling obscenities at you or mocking your in game choices? Humor is humor. If the devs feel that they can deliver a brilliant punch line by breaking the fourth wall, then so be it. I don't get the hate on FO2, it was fun. But maybe I just grok it better than some.

I would love to see them as small eastern eggs.

Like:

Lvl 1 characters enter, let's say, fully functioning and hostile Guardian Citadel.

"Your party enters Guardian Citadel. Angela Death can't see how this could go wrong."

Then, if by some miracle you actually survive and kill everyone inside:

"In front of you lies last remaining Guardian. Despite being numerically and technologically superior, not to mention better trained, somehow your squad of rookies managed to kill an entire army of the biggest badasses of the wastes. In distance you hear universe throwing a tantrum."

I like it when it is subtle, but too often it goes over the top.

Don't add shortcuts everywhere in the game for facebook, twitter, myspace, amazon, pizzas'r'us, google etc etc in the game.

I agree with the creator of the thread. Breaking the 4th wall breaks the immersion. Easter eggs should also be very rare. Fallout 2 could have been a much better game if there weren't so many over the top references to our world and times.

Fallout 2 creators on several occasions pointed out they went overboard with Easter eggs and humour in F2. Most recently Chris Avellone repeated that in Reddit AMA:

PeBeFri: One new aspect I noticed in Fallout 2 that was largely absent from its predecessor was its tendency to break the fourth wall. Looking back, which level of immersion was better suited for the Fallout universe? Will this impact Wasteland 2?

Chris F. Avellone: I prefered Fallout 1 style humor, we went overboard on F2.

So if you expect something more like F2 instead of F1 or Wasteland, think again.

That would be awesome.

Well, you don' have to agree with the creators :P
I prefer F2 humour, but I am biased because I didn't get most of the jokes. Maybe for an American playing the game by the time it was released there were too many references.

Just a small subtle reference one or twice, but nothing overboard.

While I usually prefer to be under the illusion of the game breaking the fourth wall from time to time can yield hilarious results.

I like some cracks in, if not out right breaking of the 4th wall.

Some of the best parts of Fallout 1 and 2 were descriptions that broke the 4th wall.

Fallout 2 might have gone overboard, but that doesn't mean it can't be tastefully done.

Eh, it really isn't. For every joke, there's a time and a place. Clowns are funny, but I'd rather see mutants and gangers in W2 than clowns. Who said Wasteland 2 was going to be a comedy, anyway?

I prefer an environment that takes itself seriously, believes in itself if you will, even if the things that happen in that environment are weird. Harry, the Bunny Master, didn't crack jokes. He took himself completely seriously, despite his situation and his very existence being absurd.
