Should I finish playing Fallout?

Postby kipper » April 8th, 2012, 10:23 pm

Quick background: I have played Wasteland through to the end at least 10++ times, but I've never played Fallout (I've been completely out of the computer game scene since roughly 1990 or so, until Wasteland 2 brought me back).

So anyway, I thought I'd try playing Fallout. I've been to the following areas so far: Shady Sands, Radscorpion Caves, Vault 15, Raider's Camp, Junktown, Hub, Deathclaw cave.

Overall I enjoyed Vault 15 the most, it was dark and eerie with huge mutant animals. The Radscorpion caves were also OK, if a bit monotonous, but quite challenging & scary to take them all down myself (no NPCs) with only a pistol. However, as for the rest... meh. Of the human settlements, I like Junktown the best, because it reminds me a lot of Wasteland with the Hotel, and the competing factions in town.

However, overall I'm currently frustrated by the fact that I'm spending the vast majority of my time exploring human settlements, talking to people, and (to a lesser extent) fighting people. I don't mind doing some of this type of thing, but I didn't expect it to be most of the game so far! I want more strange/bizarre/hostile places to explore.

So my question is, should I continue playing Fallout? (I'm still currently exploring Hub). Does it get more bizarre/hostile? Or is the rest pretty much similar to what I've been playing so far? I know there are walkthroughs and such out there, but I don't want to read them to spoil the game for me if I choose to continue on. I'd just like some general comments from those who have played it on what I can expect. Thanks in advance :D.

You know how Wasteland was just people and human settlements until you got hints of something more in Vegas and then Base Cochise went all crazy with the death robots? Fallout does the same. You'll get hostile, strange, and bizarre soon enough. In fact, you're right on the cusp of it. By way of comparison, you're working your way through the Temple of Blood right now.

Hub is the most populated settlement in the game, so don't worry and keep playing, kipper. So far you have experienced just some minor adventures, the most bizzare and dangerous events are still awaiting for you.

Yes. Then play 2, well maybe a take a break first. But if you are someone who played Wasteland 10 times maybe the break isn't needed

I can't binge on games myself.

2 is also more bizarre than 1, though many say to it's detriment. Might be right up your alley, but keep in mind both Fallout 1 and 2 are predominantly populated by humans.

You probably won't find a a better RPG made since Wasteland anyway, so you might as well play them.

Absolutely finish Fallout! I haven't found a better post-apocalyptic game made since, like the poster above me pointed out.

Yup.. Keep playing.. You're almost up to Necropolis. Once there you get the fun of fighting mutants and super mutants... Then things go absolutely insane. You'll love it.

Look for the crashed UFO for some more fun.. (A nasty but excitingly fun side quest... Just stock up on Rad-x and Rad-away. SAVE BEFORE GOING TOWARDS THE UFO SITE!!!! If you mess up and lose the save you'll cry...)

I believe that's a luck-based encounter, so he may never see it.

Get a caravan job. Go with them to the Brotherhood of Steel. Ask them to join. You'll get a quest involving a nice place to explore. Also, the end of the game has some strange/hostile places.

Keep playing. If I understood correctly, you haven't recovered the water chip yet and you are still in Hub, you haven't completed even 25% of the game.

OP, if you liked Vault-15, the Cathedral, Necropolis and the Glow will just blow your mind. I guarantee that.

Thanks, I have continued on and as everyone said, it got much better.

First of all, I met Loxley in the Hub, I loved him, now *that's* an NPC I really enjoyed interacting with.

Then I moved on to Necropolis, I enjoyed it when those ghouls in the street just attacked me at random! The 'kill all the mutants' job was fun too. Then I got the water chip and returned it to the Vault. I have to say, I felt a lot better without that time pressure hanging over my head.

The Glow was good too, had a fun time slaughtering robots and picking up high-tech stuff :D.

I'm currently in the Boneyard, just killed the Deathclaws with my new Plasma Rifle. And those Regulators are toast when I get back to Adytum!

The funny thing is, I originally completed Fallout without discovering... SPOILERS AHEAD:

...The Master. I just hacked the nuke in the cathedral and blew it away. Very strong WTF feeling appeared afterwards
No: First person shooter. No scaled leveling. No linear gameplay. No easy difficulty

Yes: Steep learning curve / Isometric / Warm feeling / dready atmosphere / realistic combat (best of WL/FO/JA2) / heavy weapon customization /
