Getting the word out. Why haven't people heard of this yet?

This is specific feedback and info for the websites, Kickstarter and resources for the Wasteland 2 project. This is NOT for general game feedback. Please use this for tech support and questions about payment, pledges, reward tiers, distribution methods and other company questions.

Getting the word out. Why haven't people heard of this yet?

Postby vadrick » April 5th, 2012, 6:27 am

I guess I'm a little surprised at the comments on the Kickstarter from people saying they just heard about this project. It's been weeks now.

Are we as a community not doing enough to get the word out there?

Do we need to send Mr. Fargo a care package of NoDoze and high quality coffees?

The clock is ticking. (Literally. On the front page of the website!)

Anyone have any suggestions? A couple times I've seen those comments, I've taken a moment to send an email to a couple people out of my address book and gave them a pointer.

I don't disagree with you, but, from a marketing perspective, the questions should be:

1. Who needs to find out about it?
2. How do you reach those people?

It's all about demographics. Find your target market and then figure out how to reach them. If you know the answer to #1, there's almost definitely an answer to #2.

Seriously, this has 40 000 backers and has exceeded all expectations. Be happy.
A Wasteland team is, by default, going to be much of the same team from the first two Fallout games, working on what is essentially a new installment of the Fallout series.

Just because he (or I) wants them to get more money doesn't mean he (or I) isn't happy. The more they get, the better the game gets. What's wrong with that? :?

Another good question to ask would be:

Out of all the people who have heard about the project, what is the percentage of people who became a backer?

If it was a high percentage, it may be advantageous to look into getting more of a word out. I don't really remember how I even heard about it a couple weeks ago... It was definitely some low key comment made by someone on a forum that was made in passing. I think most of the bases were covered, in terms of getting the word out. The main Fallout fan sites know and rpg codex. There have been multiple interviews as well. But it is not so much mentioning the game/ project and getting the word out, as much as it is getting what the idea of what the game actually is. Especially, in a gaming world where more people now are playing Fallout 3/NV before 1/2 (if they are even aware of their existence).

Hell, most of the draw for some people should/could be the fact that the game is going to be entirely fan funded and not have the drawbacks from being involved with a money stealing game soul sucking producer company pulling the strings of the developers. That fact in itself is appealing, especially after some of the bombs being dropped in the near recent past.

There are a lot of good things the game has going for it, which is reflected in the $2,000,000+(!!!) amount that has already been generated for its production. But I agree if the word got a little more publicity, it may very well be reflected in the amount raised. Either way, they(inXile) are doing something right. I love how much passion is involved with this project, and it isn't going to be a game made for the sake of making a game. ; )

I'm thrilled. Imagine all the sad Wasteland fans when they find out they missed the boat.

I heard about this through the "general discussion" section of a swedish bodybuilding forum. So I guess spreading the word on all internet communities you know of would be a good idea. My initial point was that the word probably has reached most of the people who are willing to pledge.

Or they can just, you know... buy the game when it's released, thus providing profit for inXile and indirectly contributing to another Kickstarer project, given the "Kicking it Forward" initiative.

But what if they miss out on a cool Wasteland Doomsday Preparation Survival kit? Devastating, I would imagine.

Go nuts, post away! Anywhere!

1) Find random board 2) Check if a Wasteland Topic is already posted 3) If not, post one, in the appropriate section 4) Move on

The issue has been well covered by many popular tech blogs and by pretty much every influential gaming website there is, so basically those who claim they've not heard about it until recently most likely means they simply haven't been into gaming for a decade or so and very little can be done about it.

I'm sure that popular gaming sites such as Kotaku, Joystiq, IGN, Gamespot, etc., will remind everyone (and invariably get some new people in) within the final 24 hours. The last few hours hours were huge for Double Fine Adventure. Hopefully it'll be the same deal here. If not, I'm happy that we at least reached the milestone for more content (though I guess it goes without saying that there could be even more content with more money).

Yes I am eager to see how much content this game will have, they said that it would be bigger than wasteland 1 , tho I don't know how big this game was, I hope it is bigger than fallout 2

I left a link here to my Steam Wasteland 2 group, where I have invited all of my friends and left kickstarter and other official links to inform and promote this, but apparently it's been censored here. I don't see anything in the forum rules prohibiting that, but nice job squashing my enthusiasm.
