RIP Jack Tramiel

Postby ADuck » April 9th, 2012, 5:45 pm

Sort of related to Wasteland, Jack Tramiel, Commodore founder and CEO who made the C64 where Wasteland would find a home, has died Sunday. Thanks to him we had computers for the masses and our PETs, VIC-20s and C64s that many of us remember fondly, not to mention he changed the computer world in a major way by making computers cheap to acquire.

RIP Jack Tramiel, a legend departs from us.

Thanks for posting this, sad to hear. The VIC-20 was my introduction to computers, and I played WL on the C64. Fond memories ...

And man, did WL ever look the best on the C64. The color palette is awesome. I tried taking the easy way out and downloading the abandonware PC version of the original Wasteland and from the very first screen it is ghastly. Playing it now on VICE instead :)

Thank you Jack. RIP

That is sad.
I've used nearly all the Commodore computers, with the exception of some of the later Amiga's.
I actually got starting in computing on a CBM, although I forget the exact model. I think it ran a variant of CP/M 2.
Then I worked my way up the ranks from VIC20s, to C64, to C128, and an early Amiga. I also owned and used a PET and a SIDEKICK. Which introduced me to the 8086/8088 as opposed to the Motorola 6800, which I was used to.
I truly have to say that the amazing graphics (at the time) and sound on the Commodores are what really got me into computers and programming. Hours upon hours of machine level programming using ML from the venerable "Compute!"
