Art style

Suggestions for what Wasteland 2 should or could include.

Yea, I think borderlands is a poor example to use, its just all cell shaded games in general look to saturday morning cartoony (wind waker, tales of symphonia, fat princess, borderlands...though as someone pointed out it isn't cel shaded technically)

I have a hard time imagining a cel shaded look I would like for this game and that may be because nobody has done anything similiar, and would prefer the art take a different direction. I would be fine with a higher resolution fall out treatment.

Really nice...as a platformer /jump`n`run...but not very usable for the upcoming rpg, hm? (just my two cents)

ha? either my english or your reading comprehension is really bad. Because I fail to see where I suggested what you think I did  Repost:

Which a minor effect and artistic takes, that adds a lot. (not sure how unique it is, I dont really play such games) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSiE-QVoZKM

I always was intrigued how artist can breath life in something so simple and want to capitalize on how important it for the Dev team to listen less to us and work on let their creative juices flow. Btw, I love the first W1 concept art, I think it's a good style for a concept art and I like the details that we see. I hope that the level designers, animators, scripters etc are at least as skilled asthe artist who drew this.

Someone brought this up in another thread, sort of a anime robotech akira style. It's also indie developed so perhaps this is within reach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEeI0bQiJWE it's called Hawken game.

And that game Mort2 just suggested. Is basically black and white, a good aesthetic for the subject matter, but I'm thinking the tone won't nearly be as dark and gritty as that. For night time scenes or dark places though they should definitely play with the light and shadows.

Nnnnnooo....

I don't think the whole "Cel Shading" thing would work for this game.

But you're thinking, bringing ideas. That's good. We need ideas.

And I love the artwork on the cover of this game... Thus I was not prepared for the monstrosity I would unveil when I boot up my PC and ran it...

Yea, I like that cover artwork. As for the other stuff people have mentioned. Please no cell shaded or cartoony/kid artwork.

I vote for very high res 2d sprites.

If they do go the 3D route then I do not want it looking like Diablo 3 or Torchlight. I want a mature look that is not cartoony. For visual reference: Fallout 2 + High Res

I can hardly blame him for standing firm. He's basing his statements on an objective fact: the original Wasteland had a comic-booky look, and keeping that for WL2 would create continuity between the two games. There's no opinion involved. You, on the other hand, want to see realism just because you like realism, even though that's never been Wasteland's thing. You're trying to change the series to fit with your whims.

Also, it's not as hard as you seem to think to update an old game's graphical style for the modern era. For example:

Image
Donkey Kong Country (1994)
Image
Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010)

Image
Dragon Quest (1987)
Image
Dragon Quest VIII (2005)

Image
Metal Gear (1987)

Image
Metal Gear Solid 3 (2004)

There are countless other examples.

Countless pointless examples.

Comic book style covers a huge range.

And because it has a small palette it's comic booky. R00fles!

And because Solid Snake is greenish it's a faithful update of metal gear. R00fles! (and shows you don't have any idea what you're talking about, it's not faithful at all in this case.)

I guess all games are comic booky before 16 bit color then. I wouldn't worry about it they know what they are doing. Getting caught up in making it "faithful" is the biggest franchise killing thing you can do. Make it faithful in the sense it's a real RPG, don't worry about stupid shit like this too much. They are not some 5th rate outfit, it's gonna look great.
