I'm posting the same thoughts that I posted over on the Codex:

I don't know... I do like the art and think that it looks cool but the rest of the update was just kind of... underwhelming. I would hope that each and every one would generate excitement about what's going into the game not how many people will have jobs because of this. Again, the update itself isn't bad because it just means more of a game we want to see but at this point I'd hope we would actually see or hear about more of it than just one picture.

I guess I was expecting more of... something besides a jobs report...

Roger Wilco wrote:Ultimately, I was hoping to see more of an 80's Pen & Paper theme for Wasteland, and this piece looks too modern to me, from the sunglasses to the color-scheme.

As far as being a group of bad-ass Rangers, its kind of "cool"...I'm just not sure it has much of a Wasteland feel to it...

Not that we had anything to go by that was this detailed, back in '87, but if I saw that piece of Artwork with no context I would never in a million years think it was connected to Wasteland.

I think it gets the point across of the Desert Rangers being a military organization, but it doesn't go beyond that into suggesting what the world / game / look of Wasteland is going to be. At least, I hope it doesn't suggest what it is going to be, because if so I'm not feeling it.

I see you posted example pictures and I can see why you are disappointed. I'm glad that is not what the concept art looked like. Seeing it in full resolution now though, I like it more than the first time. As far as saying anything about the world or overall look of the game, I don't think this image was suppose to convey that. I think it was particularly to show the look of the Rangers.

I think a good judge would be to take the art from the inside portion of the Wasteland box and ask yourself, can I see these guys in that image? I think the answer would be yes.

It's too early to decide if this concept art has any connection with what the game will look like.

In fact, we don't even know if any concept art will have any connection with what the game looks like. The game's actual graphics certainly won't be so hi-fi.

Not at all. The Rangers are a military organization, not a desert gang. They should be in military attire.

I would have rather seen pen and paper game, and 80's, influences in the artwork and color palette. The Rangers are fine from a technical standpoint, but they are dressed in more present day looking military gear rather than pen & paper style military gear. Even the sunglasses, look like Oakley's when it would have been an easy nod to Wasteland to throw on a pair of more 80's style shades, as a nod to a number of the Wasteland portrait characters shades.

The purpose of concept art is to provide the game's asset artists with a stylistic vision for basing their in game artwork off of.

Brian Fargo has also stated numerous times that they would be releasing art to get feedback before anything is nailed down and finalized. So, actually, now is not too early, but the perfect time to let them know your feelings on it.

I like it. The M4 with the front foregrip is a nice touch and I like the old west throwback mixed with dark post apocalypse.

I love it, looks fantastic. the pictures posted by Roger Wilco has more of a retro-feel to them, but even if I understand why someone would like that style in a sequel to Wasteland, I prefer the look of Wallin's concept art (by far). I also like how they look like a mix of a military force and a bandit-gang.

I like the feel of it.

There is a certain feel to these guys. They feel like a team of individuals, rather than a military group. They are observing something, each in their own way.

The clothing works for me. They are desert rangers. The Ranger HQ was located in the desert, they are going to be a bit dusty. 3 of th3 4 in front have the badge, and presumably the 4th has one that is not visible.Their gear looks like a cross between stuff that has survived/copies of stuff that would exist. The gear does look a bit more modern.

It does look like they are in the trailing edge of a sandstorm. If thats the case then the tan colouring is reasonable.

My concerns are that the colour scheme extends to everything. I want colour dammit. Not just shades of brown or indeed tan in this case :)

The mix of clothing looks like Cowboy crossed with mad max, which makes some sense, as heavy leather gear that is well kept should survive, and certainly it wouldn't be hard to replace the leather components whilst keeping the plastic and metal bits. I can handle the more modern look to gear. Altho I'd like to see some 80's sensibilities to it.

Overall I am very positive about the look. The colours will be a big thing for me tho

Roger Wilco wrote:I need to mull it over a bit more. It's just a piece of concept art, and the earliest one at that, so I wouldn't get too worked up over it in either way. As a piece of art, its very nice. As what I see for "Wasteland", I'm not so sure.

These.
I really liked how it was the first peek inside the world beginning to be re-created and this was reflected by a 'first light' kind of scene.
Like a new dawn is upon the Desert Rangers, and us by extension. The style of the whole picture was something I really liked. All the detail into each individual was very nice to see. This all goes along with the new dawn kind of theme for the introduction/opening picture of the world, imo. I really like how that feels, even if it is a bit dark. But hey, the sun hasn't risen yet. You can see color in their gear, too. It's just dawn... or they're standing in a sandstorm in front of a burning building at night. :)

I like how everyone on the art is covered up - post-nuclear "weather" must be harsh. People from this thread must be happy. :)
Although if it was a player character, I would prefer to see his face to get a better connection with him, at least on a portrait.

Looks more like ash in the air with a massive fire in the background. And the ground itself is burned - after the bombings, probably.

incredibly well done image, glad to have such a good talent working on the concept art! it`s looking very very good!

but, i agree that instead of the monochrome brown look, exploring into different colors would be something that worth to check out.

everything else, extremely good!

Harpo wrote:Maybe if you shrink it to 320x240 and increase contrast by 400% you will feel it? I believe the limited color palette of wasteland 1 would look extremely silly both in concept art and in a modern game that Have a much broader palette to utilize. I think that's the wrong kind of "old school".

Indeed, old school and retro are very different things, and Wasteland 2 is not going to be a retro game. Of course, that does not mean that the color palette should consist of the "gray, brown, and blood" colors that many modern games seem to use; the game should do everything possible to maintain Wasteland's atmosphere, while keeping up with modern technology.

I should caveat that I only played Fallout 2. But I do like the retro-futuristic 80s art style of the pics that Roger Wilco posted very much, and think that WL2 could still move more in that direction without losing the "credibility" / "badassed-ness" suggested by the concept art. Stylistically, wouldn't doing so be a good way for WL2 to differentiate itself from other games or rpgs too? I'm all for more colours and campiness! The current art style seems to take itself a bit too seriously, compared to my impression of what WL was.

I don't know why everyone keeps assuming Wasteland 2 will be retro-80s. inXile has mentioned no such thing. It might be. I see no reason to assume it would be.

It's because the (possible) misunderstanding that the "vocal" WL fans want exactly that. Reading the forums gives one enough incentive to think it that way.

I agree - the overall look works for me (It looks like a team of Rangers that has been out in the wastes a while), but I have the same concerns about the colors.
