[Bad Memory] Running out of ammo to buy

Postby Bryce777 » March 16th, 2012, 9:05 am

That was a really bad moment when I realized the shop had no more to sell. Thankfully I was able to get good with axes.

This really happened in WL?

I have never noticed it there, but it was a terrible nuisance in Fountain of Dreams.

you have to really run through ammo to make it happen but if you clear vegas by full bursting it will.

I remember doing this once. I bought out all the 7.62 from Needles because the Cyborgs in the sewers kept screwing me over. I figured it was an easy enough fix, I just went to Quartz. Only to find out they used the same inventory. I believe that was the first time I ever re-wrote one of the play discs mid-game.

Yeah, I've seen Needles run out of 7.62 which is prolly the eaiser ammo to exhaust in the game

yeah, ammo shortages was probably my biggest "gripe" with Wasteland (i get how its a post apocalyptic world and all, but there was never any shortage of nasty killer robots eager to put you in the hospital).

How i "circumvented" that on the C-64 back then.. i made 5 copies of disk 2 (which had the guardian citadel), and every time i ran dangerously low on ammo, i just visited the citadel and popped in an unused copy. ahh, the memories :D

I've never run out of 7.62mm ammo, but I always found myself in want of more power packs, which you can't buy in stores. Very annoying. In Base Cochise, despite that storage room filled with power packs, I still found myself in dire need because I was plowing through ammo so quickly against Reapers, Xenons and VTOLs. I was forced to quickly complete the game because each member only had around 2 power packs each when I reached the endgame section.

AT was a chore because it was a one-time fire, and the max damage from an RPG that I ever got was only 1/2 of what a full auto Meson could do on a good day. When your party members are all at 5++ CON, the situation becomes even more desperate and you just have to find the most convenient way out. I only ever gave AT weapons to members who didn't have the Ion Beamer or Meson Cannon.

Full auto on the Meson Cannon is a total waste of ammunition. Full auto damage is figured by (essentially) single shot damage multiplied by number of rounds. While an individual shot from a Mason does far more damage than a Laser Rifle, the Laser Rifle has twice the ammunition, making it actually do more damage on full auto. When I'm using energy weapons, I usually have one character with a Mason, with with the Ion Beamer, and the other two with Laser Rifles. Laser Rifles still do pretty good damage (12D6). While an RPG-7 technically does more damage (13D6), that evaporates once you trigger a burst or go full auto.

Hm interesting. What weapons do you give to the recruitable characters? I can never predict when they're going full auto or burst, so I just give them the laser rifle so they don't plow through ammo with the Meson.

Generally, I don't use them, except Vax. Otherwise, I'd probably give them a Laser Rifle or Carbine. There's quite a few Rifles lying around that you can dig up a few spares.

Even Powerpacks I don't think I run out of Unless I'm just screwing around. If you're just moving through the narrative then you shouldn't run out...BUT yeah you shouldn't go full AUTO on every thing. ONly the XENON CANNONS really need it

I remember the ammo issues well. The only thing that's come close to it, in modern games, was Fallen Earth.

Most modern games let you have as much as you want or, at the very least, stores never run out.

Actually that is one of the dynamics I really liked - you are basically scavengers. If you run out of ammo, it forces you to use different weapons. That way you don't run around going full auto 100% of the time, and skills like clip pistol and brawling and SMG actually have a purpose. (In my opinion, it kinda sucks to be able to start, go to savage village, get assault weapons right away, and then kick ass all the way to Vegas.)

I come down on the side of those who liked the ammo shortages of both WL and Fallout. I also liked the rarity of the most sophisticated ammo/weapon types. If memory serves, there was only 1 Ion Beamer and 2 Meson Canons in all of WL. Laser rifles were pretty useless after Sleeper 1. In addition, those weapons ate power packs like no tomorrow. I remember having to travel back to the Sleeper Base cache a couple of times to restock and still getting close to running out by game's end. Since there were only 2 proton axes and many enemies that stayed out of melee range, I found I had to pick my battles around Cochise. Vax coming fully armed and with ammo was a pretty welcome site.

Obstacles that may prove insurmountable give me a great sense of accomplishment when I do surmount them. It's something I find seriously lacking in many current games. Just my 2 cents

Of all the times I played the game, there was only one time I actually completely exhausted all the stores of their stock of 7.62mm ammo.

Ditto, running out of ammo to buy blew chunks. I can understand the idea of limited stores but frankly there are millions of rounds stockpiled. I forget how many billion rounds of 7.62x39 ammo was left in just the Romanian AK plants at the end of the cold war but it was oodles and more oodles. The amount of which has made its way stateside? Well, it might not be easy to get at...in a world gone to shit, most of the population dead, ammo scarcity would only be an issue if you really lit some bastards up. Stuff like 5.56x45, .270, 7.62x51 pr x39, 9mm, etc wouldn't exactly vanish overnight. It might be hoarded but it would hardly dry up entirely. Stuff like my 6.8 or a friend's 5.7mm wouldn't exactly be there for mass consumption.
If you're not moving you should be shooting, if you're not shooting you should be reloading, if you're not moving, shooting, or reloading someone is going to cut off your head and put it on a stick-Clint Smith Thunder Ranch
