Random Encounter Locations

Postby windrider » March 28th, 2012, 2:53 pm

Wanted to start a thread to discuss Random Encounter Locations:

Similar to Fallout series, while exploring the world the players can generate random encounters. What unique locations/encounters would you like to see?

I would like to see the rangers encounter a fortified bunker that houses a 2nd-3rd generation family of survivalists. I would like to see such an encounter have multiple choices ranging from combat to negotiation.

How about a sunken vessel populated by mutants that descended from the original crew? Maybe a nuclear sub or something? Probably not a good idea to explore it until the party obtains Rad Suits though :)

I'd like to be able to run into Mad Max type character(s). Not necessarily hostile, but not initially friendly either. Maybe encounter them by a broken down vehicle or fortified house.

I would like to encounter 2 parties engaged in combat. Something like a caravan defending itself from road bandits, or a group of survivalists running away from hunter-killer droids.

Would love to see what the rest of you guys come up with.

A three-headed monkey lol. And it fits within a radiated environment.

A Doctor Who reference, mayhaps?
Everyone dies alone. That's what it is. It's a door. It's one person wide. When you go through it, you do it alone. But it doesn't mean you've got to be alone before you go through the door. And believe me, you aren't alone on the other side.

If the game world expands enough, truck stops would be interesting places for encounters.

Some could be abandoned. Some could be fully operational, open for business where the party can get food, fuel, ammo and souvenirs!

Like that idea about fortified bunkers/houses. Take it a step further and have entire survivalist communities that have turned into incorporated towns, with what would (considering Wasteland was set in 2087, roughly 100 years after The War) those survivalists would be more like 4th and even 5th generation survivalists.

Something I think would be really cool, considering the setting, would be a fortified compound built around an oasis/pump house for an underground reservoir. In a desert wasteland, water could be worth it's weight in gold.

A place like Barter Town would be a nice nod to Mad Max 3. Especially if it's home to a Thunderdome style arena where people settle up on bad blood "...as provided by The Law.".
Make the M19 an M14 analog. That's all I want. Swear to God.

A Doctor Who reference would be awesome!

Also, I'm 100% for random encounters! I loved in Fallout, I'd love 'em in Wasteland.

I would like to see something done like that episode of The Twilight Zone called The Rip Van Winkle Caper.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqZLL7o- ... ure=relmfu

Spoilers for those who don't want to watch it.

Group of robbers go into suspended animation for 100 years to get away from the law after they steal a bunch of gold. They wake up, end up killing each other, and in the end the last guy gives a future person a bar of gold for water. The viewer then learns that gold is worthless since they learned to manufacture it.

I'd like to just encounter the end scene really. Coming across a guy dying on the side of the road in pre war clothes. He offers you a bar of gold for water then dies.

Or maybe a encounter like the episode A Hundred Yards Over the Rim. Finding a guy with really out of place clothes asking for medicine, and before he leaves he gives you his gun.

[You see a small Blue Box out in the distance amongst a massive pile of rubble.]

[Move closer]

[Your party is being assaulted by a group of Cyborgs! (New-Men)]

[Your party has collapsed from combat exhaustion.]

[Your party has surprisingly -- miraculously still alive -- woken up to the sounds of Cyborgs being destroyed until the last one is killed, then silence falls.]

[Most of the party is still recovering from the attack, but all of you heard a loud whooshing sound and searched for the source of the sound but soon gave up on searching.]

(Extra text if one or more Ranger/NPC(s) has a perception of 4 or higher)

[The most perceptive among you still search and realize the Blue Box that was once in the pile of rubble has vanished from sight, how something so seemingly heavy could be moved so quickly is a mystery. Some of you examine the dead machines and find a Jelly Baby.]

A reference to the Cybermen, Silence, the TARDIS, and Jelly Babies; I wish they would add something like this...

As a person who has nothing to do with US and due to lack of games about other nations, I would very much welcome rendom encounters (or not random) with other nations :)

Maybe the sub/ship mention in OP could be British or Russian or what ever as long as no stereotypes used. Also maybe you could enlist some crew from such encounters, so that it will be not only fun but also useful :geek:

Personally, I would like to see subtle references to Fallout.
No: First person shooter. No scaled leveling. No linear gameplay. No easy difficulty

Yes: Steep learning curve / Isometric / Warm feeling / dready atmosphere / realistic combat (best of WL/FO/JA2) / heavy weapon customization /
