[Bad Memory] Mining Silver

Postby BraveDogBFG » March 27th, 2012, 5:20 am

Vein of silver in the cave? Oh joy! Free Unlimited money.

Made a macro to mine silver and put a stapler on the F1 key. Came back in the morning, tens of thousands richer. Awesome, I am going to become a walking armory.

Time to leave the cave. Lots of encounters, hmmm. Every step I am getting attacked. Deathclaw! Survived. Deathclaw! Lost a party member, but was able to save with medic. Deathclaw! Lost my medic. Deathclaw! Skeletons.

"Greed" will getcha every time...

think it was 'repeating' with the pick ax about 5-10 times... good part was it 'added' a couple NEW adversaries to the "Mine's" list of adversaries; the bad part was after a couple 'steps' the random encounters began... and continued with each of the next several steps... more 'survivable' with decent armor...

Do the same thing in the NW corner WITHOUT activating the frequent random encounters / attacks !!!!!

How did you use F1 to repeat an action... I thought it was like a 3 step process? Don't you have to use Metallurgy, use Pick. Even if you just had to use the pick that's like four commands to select the character, use the item, and pick the direction???!

Macros, wonderful macros! Only in the PC version. Ctrl-Fkey starts/stops recording, Fkey runs the macro. Unfortunately, when running the game in DOSBox, most of the Fkeys are reserved, so you have are limited to F2 and F3. Still better than nothing.

You can reprogam the dosbox F-keys by pressing F1, they are the large group in the lower right, you can change them or remove them.

Also, you only have to use metallurgy once. After you figure out that it's a silver vein, you just need to use the pickaxe and collect the money.

C64 (Emulator)
I tried the NW corner, but a NPC (I think it was Ace) had my pick axe, so I let him mine the silver.
I got the message, that a small portion of silver had been mined, but then the game froze.

Update: must be a bug with the disk images as the game freezes every time i try to mine silver, regardless of which character uses the pick ax.

I always hated the random encounters here, as well, but bulletproof shirts or kevlar vests minimize the hazard, of course.

I almost always use the mine to get tons of cash now rather than gambling because it doesn't feel as unbalancing to me as the gambling quirk. *shrug* The mine generates about $1320/hour of digging (each use of the pickaxe gives 1d10 cash and it takes four uses per minute) so I take as long as I need then waltz into Quartz to load up on goods.
No matter how thinly you slice it, it's still bologna.
