Due to the lack of a general forum category I decided to put this here. Moderators, feel free to move it elsewhere.

I have a problem with a general sort of counter (or supportive) argument that's on the rise. It seems to function as a sort of.. stopper to completely harmless, creative thought. It has started to irk me a because it is based solely on assumptions on how the development of Wasteland 2 is going to be financed. It has rarely anything to do with the idea at hand. I fear that, if hammered on enough, it will make some people stop from suggesting potentially great ideas.

Roughly put:

- "Idea X is a bad idea because it will cost too much money."

Why this is is a nonsense type of counter argument:
  • You have no idea idea how much it would actually cost. Don't even go there.
  • Completely separate proprietary software may be involved, saving development costs.
  • At this point in time it cannot possibly be clear to anyone how much funding inXile is going to rake in.

This is not a contest to get our own ideas in, everybody should get to give whatever input on the project they can and be rated for it fairly. That will be all.

This is true. They could rake in a billion USD for all we know.

Signed. We should refrain from such comments, even if what we think is for the best interest of the game. inXile is not incapable of weighing the pros and cons themselves anyways.

So you want a fair and open discussion of ideas, except for the fair and open discussion of development cost, because you don't like it when people talk about that? Everyone can propose ideas, and then everyone else can discuss why it would/would not work, including cost.

We don't know how much the game will bring in. That doesn't mean we can't make realistic estimations on what would be cost-prohibitive. First-person. Fully voiced dialog. Yes, those things will be cost-prohibitive. We're not really going to bar it. It's a fair point to bring up.

I've also not really seen this brought up often enough for it to be an issue, to be honest. Hadn't even thought about it until this thread. Examples?

Usually people also add something like these things can be added IF there's still money left. People have different priorities and that's what the discussion is all about. If some people express themselves poorly or are being rude, just ignore them.
