Wasteland 2 Mac and Linux versions confirmed

Postby Brother None » March 22nd, 2012, 11:56 am

Although the official Kickstarter drive is not at $1.5 million yet, Brian Fargo has noted InXile is officially committed to creating a Mac and Linux version to go along with the Windows version.

As of this postings, the Kickstarter drive is at $1,490,188. Paypal adds $2970. The Codex ($9449) and NMA ($1371) pledges means that unofficially we're already well over $1.5M, but the Kickstarter drive itself will reach that total soon enough.

1.5 mil in a few days.
A legendary game already... 8-)

And now, what's the next goal?

Well, this is nice news for all the Mac and Linux players out there. Macbooks are pretty popular with college students these days so the devs might try marketing the game to them.

As I've stated before, I hope their next set of priorities for further donations is proper voice acting and a mod kit.

I am extremely disinterested in voice acting. I really don't see it as any sort of addition.
in my opinion

Great!
I will be happy to see Desura announce as well as alternative for Steam.
I glad to be part of people who support Linux gaming.

The digital version will be available DRM-free, and I believe InXile fully plans to release it through a variety of DD providers. Which ones exactly remains to be seen, obviously.

Yep I know, I think game should be available on GOG as well.
But anyway there is lot of time before release, so we can even see Steam for Linux... who know...

Sweet!Best news since reaching the basic goal. ;)

This may be silly/non-applicable idea, but maybe hooking up with Humble Indie Bundle guys would make sense?

+1, even though I wouldn't want to have to buy it for the second time on GOG.

I hope its a PC first release then Mac and Linux version trailing afterward. It seems messy to do all 3 at once, and confirm compatibility of all 3 at once. Since major market share is still going to be PC.

Nobody force you to buy it one more time, but GOG its great site for people who want to by DRM-free games.
I don't really need to ask about it for myself, but lot of people will be pleased for that.

I don't support ideas about windows-only release because there is no problems to release 3 versions in same time.
Anything else will be really unfair to Mac/Linux backers. ;)

I would say that it's easier to do all three at the same time. If you do Windows first, you end up with a software written for Windows with all the assumptions that come with it, which then have to be ported to other platforms, whereas writing three at the same time, will catch a lot of assumptions that are true for one platform but false for others.

PiPboy wrote:Since major market share is still going to be PC.

This is interesting point, and encourages on some HIB statistics which shows that in various HIB editions, Mac+Linux constituted for 25%-40% of all purchases. So yes, technically Windows is the majority, but a quarter of users should not be treated like a second class citizens.

<off-topic>What is also interesting, is that the average price Linux and Mac users are willing to pay is higher then of Windows users (in fact Linux being the highest) debunking theory that Linux users want everything for free, but that's a topic for a completely different thread on completely different forum.</off-topic>

Absolutely. What I meant to say is that for convenience I would love to have it in my GOG catalogue just by getting it via the Kickstarter reward.

While it's not an old game (but they don't really stick with it that much anymore since they released The Witcher 2 there), I think GOG would definitely be a good place to release it, given that a lot of the people who buy games at GOG are Wasteland 2's target audience.

Yeah, but that's because their sister company was the developer (and parent company was publisher for Poland), so it may be harder to convince GOG to publish some random new game, but nothing wrong in trying. :)

Also, it could came bundled with W1.

EA has the rights to WL1. And while Wasteland 2 is not an old game, I think it's going to be suitably old-school to be perfect for GOG.

it's a very little possibility that EA will release its rights on W1. especially now that there might be an opportunity for 'em to make money off of it.

There is 0% chances.
EA doesn't interested to move for such small money like Wasteland 1/2 can make. :(
