Black Market

Postby Unzen » March 16th, 2012, 4:40 pm

To this day, I'm not quite sure why this particular point in the game carried so much resonance with me.

I remember sat in front of the TV with the silly-hot C-64 perched on my lap and being asked what the password was for entering the Black Market.

I don't recall if I got it wrong once and the guards attacked, or if it took a couple of attempts - but suddenly being outnumbered and out-gunned saw a flurry of keyboard clicks in order to survive. I managed it... just.... and grabbed a couple of leather jackets and Uzis for my troubles.

I also remember on entering the Black Market for the first time - just how expensive most of the kit was to buy!

Good times. :D

How do you find the password to the Black Market? I believe the only way I ever entered the Black Market was eliminating the two guards.

The Wasteland Survival Guide mentionsedthe password to the Black Market but I do not believe I ever discovered how to get that password.

The password to black market is CRETIAN I think....and I think you can get it from conversations with the Bartender...Can't remember. The only reason to go their I think is for the Chainsaw, for Melee Chars, and I guess Kevlars, but really I found it ultimately to be a rip off

I think it's "CRETIN" but not sure. I think the two sick guys might have the password too, but don't quote me on that.

Yeah if I recall correctly, you get the password (cretin) by giving something to some sick people nearby. Fruit? Snake Squeezin's? I forget.

I think you somehow mix fruit and the Squeezins. My memory of these things amazes me :D

That password does sound familiar now!

Combining one Fruit with one Chemical produces one dose of Antitoxin. Bottles of Chemicals are found in the Outlaw Headquarters in Quartz.

The Black Market was the only store that sold Plastic Explosives and Sabot Rockets.

One strategy I read on the Web was to sell all LAW Rockets and RPG-7s and only use Mangers and Sabot Rockets when assaulting the Guardian CItadel. You probably need to purchase a few Sabot Rockets because you may not find enough when looting enemies.

Thanks for the suggestion to talk to the Bartender. I thought that was the answer but I never knew what phrases to use.

There were two passwords. C64 and Apple had CRETIN and PC had CRETIAN.

The trick to getting the password (and the password for Darwin Base) was following a somewhat long chain of questions with the bartender. You couldn't just ask him for the password. You had to ask about FINSTER, BASE, PLAGUE, ISOLATE, and... um... something else I think. Then you had to ask him for a DRINK, buy a second drink, and then you could go through the list again for new information, and you could finally ask him about PASSWORD, METAL MANIAC, and BRIAN THE FIST (coding goof; it's how you get the info on Mad Dog Fargo).

Of course, I usually just preferred to gun down the black market guards for the XP and loot.

Yeah I think its an old Bard Tale's ref they used as place filler, then forgot to change. Really its not that hard to waste the two assholes guarding it, but if you need to go in early for a chainsaw or something then it can be useful.

Brian the Fist was one of the premade characters in Bard's Tale I. Never knew about that reference before. I'm learning all sorts of wonderful new things about this game.

Yeah, apparently it was put in as a QA placeholder before they named the NPC but nobody got around to swapping out the placeholder for the real name. Oops!

Second and later playthroughs of the game I would sneak into town while I still only had my starting skin, would grab an uzi or whatever smg i could afford and then head back to Quartz or Ag Village and destroy them :)

I think the Uzi's from the Desert Scum were the first automatic weapons I ever got in Wasteland in my early playing days.

One of my characters actually died because my party medical were so inept!
The biggest failure in the recent past is this assumption that the audience is not smart.Too much effort is being spent making it dummy proof..all the clues are being held right in front of their nose. The exploration and journey is the reward
