Cheesy or Cartoony Graphics

Avoid the gimmicks, take us seriously!
Please don't give us cheesy graphics like Borderlands or cartoony graphics like in WoW!

Y'know, at this point, I give up.

I demand NO graphics.

Make it a text-only game.

I think the graphics should be in some sense "stylized" because photorealistic graphics either cost a lot, or look terrible (or, more often, both). And whatever the stylization winds up being should compliment the general "tone" of the world. The original featured some pretty cheesy/cartoony graphics without harming the overall tone of the game, but I'm not sure if that's the direction the devs want to go on this one. I do think that humour is an important facet of the Wasteland experience, though, and that part of that humour has to come through in the graphics.

Too much focus on graphics. I wouldn't actually mind something "cartoony," but cartoons aren't necessarily cheesy. there are a lot of styles. there are gritty Batman noir graphic novels and brightly colored Superhero comics. Realism in graphics does not equal realism in gameplay - as in interactions with characters. I hate the realism that means the characters can be seen from all sides but they are one-dimensional characters.

Agreed. I hate cartoons and anything that even remotely resembles them. I grew out of them after about the age of 9 or 10 I think. I can't even watch anime and I'm a japanophile. I think I would also prefer a text game with detailed illustrations every so often to cel shaded graphics.

I disagree. Graphics along the lines of what Arne did (http://diglett.blogspot.com/2012/03/wasteland-2.html) would be fine.

Well im hoping the graphic style will be along the same lines as fallout 1& 2 but using a upto date 3D engine, cartoon or childish graphics would not fit this game world and im sure and hope it will be a dark grim world not colourful and bright.

No im not mistaking anything at 44yrs old i do know what it looked like i played it first time around, but they didnt have the graphic power to make it look like fallout at the time.,as brian says on the vid Fallout was going to be wasteland 2 but they couldnt do it as waistland, also the other guys on the team are ex fallout guys,i would be VERY surprised if it doesn't have a lot more in common with fallout.

Cartoon graphics would definitely be unexpected for this game because blood and gore and sex and killer robots would stand in stark contrast against a brightly colored cartoonish universe, but that does not mean they don't fit. On the contrary, that gives the combination more reason to be pondered and appreciated and makes the game more compelling. It would be disappointing if we limited our creativity because we feared a new approach.

and so they had to do something completely different - at least visually and iconically if not in terms of mood and theme - because that is how Copyright works.

Wrong it was different because graphics had advanced,so you really think they are going to make this look like the first game ??.And they didnt do something completely different, im 100% sure it will not look anything like waistland 1,waistland 1 looked colourfull because it couldnt look ANY other way at the time, but anyway have the last say i really dont care.

No. It was different because they opted for a different setting and pretty different tone. They changed quite a lot, they didn't just make a copy of Wasteland under another name.

Wasteland's style is definitely a child of its time to some extent, but pretending it needs to be overhauled completely because "graphics have advanced" is pretty ignorant.

Speaking of, please watch your tone. And spelling/grammar.

I know it was a while ago, but I haven't lost that much of my memory; I'm pretty sure we still had brown and grey in the 80s. I think I stand on pretty solid footing when I say these colours were not inventions of the 90s.

So what im going to get banned because my spelling/grammar are off lol,and if you have a link to some info that says they changed the graphics because of what you say that would be great, because i still think the reason the graphics had bright colours is because they couldn't make them any other way at the time.If my spelling and grammar are not correct well im sorry but you will need to ban 99% of the people on hear. And tone how does tone translate into text ??,if the mods on hear start banning people for poor spelling and tone i think the amount of pledges for money will drop drastically.Nobody has called anybody or used any foul language so warning people for spelling/grammar is the craziest thing ive ever seen.

Seriously, dude, calm down. And good grammar/spelling are encouraged.

You can read more about how Fallout's setting was created here and on other articles on NMA. As krellen said, they did have brown in the 80s. The bright colors are a part of design.

Uh huh. Yeah. Okay go to this wiki

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_in_video_gaming

and follow some of the links to those games and then get back to us about the colors that were available in computer games.

The design and appearance of Wasteland was an intentional choice.
