I would not be put off by cell shading, so long as it was a good art style that was complimented by their shader choice.

** What I've been wondering about though, is their use of encounter portraits. Cell shading might be good for a consistent style that steers clear of the uncanny valley. Think what the alternative could look like?

I feel almost bad for posting it again, as I already did it in other threads before and I'm probably going to look/sound as an obsessed maniac, but i would really love some over-stylized approach for in-game graphics, in way similar to what Another World or Darklands did in the early '90s.

Characters and models were barely silhouettes with very fluid animations. It was a very cost-effective and yet extremely cool style.
On top of this kind of "world visualization" I'd love to see 2D animated portraits for characters (Jagged Alliance 2 comes to mind as an example).

The cinematics in DL looked amazing, so does another world.

I don't think anyone with good taste would dislike that, and they are somewhat similar to the obviously not cell shaded stuff Hiver posted.

I don't know how easy that will be to pull off if they use 3D, though.

Well, Another World used 3D. Pretty much every animated element in the game was made out of polygons.

Good looking game. If we got something that good for WL2 I'd be more than satisfied. It's also similar to the original but higher def.

It's cel shading. What's really interesting is that it looks a thousand times better when you remove the thick black borders through config editing.

Please no cell shading or cartoony looks, Please. I want a little dark/grim look. It doesn't have to be fallout level, but I really hope not too see wow looking characters.

Maybe less artsy, but the mood/atmosphere of the warriors was great. The gangs were colorful and the whole movie set the tone of the 70's/80's. (highly recommend watching, there is also a game for it which this art pick is reference too)

I think the rifts books also capture a lot of interesting feelings

Alien slavers using cloned blind warrior women slaves to capture slaves. Think about how awesome that is for a second.

Raider on a cybernetic horse

A hidden base that survived the fall that captures humans and uses them as Gennie pigs for its experiments in cybernetic enhancements.

Another day in the life of the wanted

fake warrior/amazon women created by an AI to fool people into thinking their is a nation of warrior women protecting an area far away from his hidden base. It is a scam to keep people from finding his real base. How awesome is THAT?

This thread just reminded me of Moebius and his art.
He passed away recently and it would be nice to see a nod to him, so I'll probably mention him in the easter egg thread.

I think it should stay away from anything near as comic book looking as Borderlands. I loved BL but that's not right for WL

Now that you mention it Azrael, I really like that idea. The Warriors was a great example of a colorful, interesting, and in some cases outrageous cast and treatment, without ever being "silly" looking.

Rifts is Rifts, and Rifts is not Wasteland. I really don't think the Rifts style fits at all.

This is neat!

This is what the video game boxes cover art used to look like in quality. It's technically feasible we can have a game that actually looks like this now. :D

Of course, lets not forget wasteland own inspirational cover art. This is a strong image and conveys perfectly a world of without order. I really want the game and its art to reflect this scene here(in the appropriate situations obviously, not all the wasteland will be so bleak). I hope they use a similar old school art for the second game cover.

I agree.
(And they are not going to be hiring Newton Ewell, Kevin Long, and Kieth Parkinson anytime soon.)

Believe it or not... I would actually (probably) love it if Bethesda picked up the Rifts license.

This image from the front flap is pretty striking too, even if it's less well known.

I didn't say I wanted rifts(er, actually I do, just not this game), but I do want some influence ideas from the art.

(going on a slight tangent) With that said, I do NOT want bethesda to make a rifts game, like wasteland I want it to be an RPG PC exclusive. While bethesda makes some fun fps games, the RPG is seriously lacking(elder scrolls), or overly simplified branching choices and dialog (fallout), not to mention the games too kidy friendly. Look at what they did with the fallout license, they stripped out the mature elements that people loved and left behind a shell of what made fallout great. It's also why everybody is flocking here supporting wasteland 2. We want the old school stuff back BAD. I do want to see a rifts RPG though, just not made by bethesda...hmmm, I wonder what Brian and the team will be doing after wasteland...*hint*..*hint*

No arguments there ~I'd even say, 'Preaching to the Choir'. ;)

However... Bethesda impresses me with the art design and 3d assets of their titles, and I do think they would do a good title with the Rifts license. I don't think it would stray far from "Skyrim with 'Borgs", but if that's a given, I think the game would be a real blast to play. Image

Of course, Wasteland cover art fits nicely as reference for Wasteland 2's art style, it's almost a tautology.
My problem with taking some artwork as reference is that it never gives a proper idea of how it's going to look in the actual game.
I would prefer if proposal about the art style of the game were made with in-game examples, to be honest; ai I did in the previous page.
