I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Rebby wrote:I kind of got the idea from the modern/classic option on the game 'Dark Spire'. Undoubtedly that was easy to implement, but I don't see why a retro option for wl2 is mockable considering it's a turn based game anyway.
For what possible benefit though? Why would any developer implement that?Rebby wrote:I would love to see the ability to switch between 3d and 2d.
Well... even if they wanted to do that, they'd not need two engines; just either the 2D assets (unfathomable), or not exploit the benefits of the 3d engine (still using 3d assets either way; with the first option simply being textured planes mapped with the 2d assets; the latter being 3d models always seen from 90°).Mandemon wrote:Yes, because clearly making two different graphics mode that require two different engines is the most sensible approach.

Dungeonkeeper does this...JerryLove wrote:Gizmo wrote:For what possible benefit though? Why would any developer implement that?.Rebby wrote:I would love to see the ability to switch between 3d and 2d.
Interestingly: you can do exactly this in Civ V. You can switch to a 2D map where everything is represented by 2D static sprites.

Yeah.Despite some comments to the contrary: You would not need a second engine. A 3D engine is perfectly capable of displaying squares (or hexes, or discrete pixels, or whatever) with images on them.
