2D Sprites or 3D Models? [poll added]

Suggestions for what Wasteland 2 should or could include.

Moderator: Rangers

If Wasteland 2 is actually a top-down game with 2D backgrounds, what would you prefer?

I would love to see the ability to switch between 3d and 2d.

Great idea! I would also like to see an ability to switch between RPG and FPS modes. You know, when you get bored with all those quests, characters and tactics stuff, you would able to grab a weapon and finish game by killing all monsters. Sidescrolling mode could be also nice.

I'd like to see sn infinite amount of quests, full voice acting from all my favorite actors, Crysis 9-level graphics, the entire post-apocalyptic earth modeled down to the interior of every single bombed-out building, and writing so good it converts Roger Ebert into a gamer and moves Harold Bloom to tears.

Unfortunately, those are not things that are going to happen, no matter how much I want them to. Your idea is the same way.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I kind of got the idea from the modern/classic option on the game 'Dark Spire'. Undoubtedly that was easy to implement, but I don't see why a retro option for wl2 is mockable considering it's a turn based game anyway.

Yes, because clearly making two different graphics mode that require two different engines is the most sensible approach.

You realize that in Dark Spire it's choice between 32-bit 2D graphics or 16-bit 2D graphics, not between 2D and 3D?

[sarcasm]
You could have 3d and 3d with a shitty 16-color pixelated filter on top...
And a sniff card you scratch when prompted ingame.
And 3D glasses that come with the game!
And maybe the game glows in the dark!
And umm... no interface! Your characters would just emit smoke in various colors to signal to you about their condition!

For what possible benefit though? Why would any developer implement that?

Well... even if they wanted to do that, they'd not need two engines; just either the 2D assets (unfathomable), or not exploit the benefits of the 3d engine (still using 3d assets either way; with the first option simply being textured planes mapped with the 2d assets; the latter being 3d models always seen from 90°).

Interestingly: you can do exactly this in Civ V. You can switch to a 2D map where everything is represented by 2D static sprites.

Come to think of it: There are also an awful lot of games with a top-down, 2D, static-image version of themselves (they usually call this a "map") in-game.

Despite some comments to the contrary: You would not need a second engine. A 3D engine is perfectly capable of displaying squares (or hexes, or discrete pixels, or whatever) with images on them.

Dungeonkeeper does this...

But is there any benefit from it? [in Civ V]; anything comparable to DKs first person mode... which does show additional benefits not offered in the standard ¾ iso view.)

There are a few third person games like DK 1 & 2, Nocturne and KotOR that offer a limited first person view for close examination of the area ~In Nocturne and KotOR you cannot travel in FPP, but can choose it for a view of the scene.

I would not be opposed to this use in Wasteland 2; Also Earth 2160 does one better... In that game you play from standard Iso view, but can access a realtime helmet cam view from any unit that you control...

I wouldn't mind that either ~provided there was some deliberate ~intended use in the gameplay; not just for sake of the FPP view itself.

Yeah.
