I would love a Linux port.

I wonder if the work required is similar than for a mac port.

I also like to have a Linux version.

I already pledged money, but would pledge more if there is an Linux version.

the cool thing about linux is that you can dedicate a lot of power to one game with an installation (say, debian) that only has bare essential packages to run the game. of course, this would have made sense if wasteland 2 was excessively demanding like top level FPSs.

Registered to show my support for Linux port.

As far as I respect this project in any sense I would only support it if there will be a port for Linux.

Cross-platform development will not be extra-hard when considered ahead from the start. (i.e. not choosing platform-tied solutions) And also could benefit both for players and the developers.

We are initially going to develop and release through Steam for PC. However, depending on how funding goes (*hint* *hint*) for the Kickstarter project, we are more than open to releasing it on other platforms too!

I'm sorry, but this is a BS response. I've seen it a billion times before and I don't buy it one bit. "Well, we'll see how the funding goes and maybe we'll port it." NEVER happens. If you don't plan for it to start the project it gets pushed to the side and it's "forgotten" as an option.

I'd love to drop a hundred bucks into the project but without knowing that I'll be able to play the game on my preferred system (Linux), you don't get my money.

Hi there! Signing up to cast my vote for the linux version. Have backed the project with this thought in mind.
Also, IMO Steam is highly overrated, and other distribution platforms (Desura, for example) shouldn't be neglected.

I made a $50+16 pledge... Thanks for russian localization!
I hope that Linux version of this game will be avaliable.
I don't know why developers are afraid of Linux. Relative donations from "linuxoids", by the way, often is bigger than other systems users.

The most important part of the code being completely platform-independent and libre, than people will eventually port it to all possible platforms they want. Free Software and Open Source code is more important than support of any particular platform.

But I think, GNU/Linux must not be neglected, as it's only OS which can work on PC, Mac, game consoles including OpenPandora, GP2x Caanoo and PS3. Windows doesn't work on consoles, MacOS X does not work on most PCs.
So even if only GNU/Linux version available, it is enough for owners of PCs, Macs and most game consoles. No other software platforms exist with such big hardware coverage.

Even android device owners will get some chances, since there is Ubuntu for Android is going out.

Also, I would recommend Ubuntu Software Center / apt + other package repositories as primary distribution platform.

I never played Wasteland but I absolutely loved Fallout 2 and 1. I would very much like to see a spiritual successor to them and would like to pledge money, but if you say that it will be Windows/Steam-only then I feel I may get a bad deal out of it. I don't use Steam or Windows and there are no guarantees that Wasteland 2 will work on Wine, so I might end up paying for nothing.

Nowadays I download games through torrent, and if they work on Wine and I end up liking them, I sometimes buy a boxed DVD and put it on my shelf. I don't pay for downloads and I need to feel that I own a game and am not subject to the whims of an ephemeral proprietary Internet service.

The only reason to write non-portable games is that writing portable 3D graphics code is hard. Since this is going to be a 2D game, this is a moot point and there is no reasonable justification for not writing it portably. Just use something like OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL and not Windows-specific code. You write it once and it works everywhere. See ioquake3 and other Id-based engines, for example.

Releasing the code would be unorthodox, but see Frogatto for an example of a game with free code and proprietary data that has been successful on the iPhone. By releasing the code you could get the community to do your porting job for you. And if you want your game to still work everywhere after 20 years, this is pretty much your only bet. Id release their code, and there are games like the Ur-Quan Masters, 7kaa, Aliens vs Predator, Freespace and others which work on many platforms thanks to their code having been released under a free license.

So please, if you want my money then say you will at least release this for GNU/Linux or will ensure it's Wine-compatible. And if you want me to buy the game afterwards, release it physically and preferably without copying restrictions. Thanks.

Since I'm using OS Linux, then I beg you to release this OS, or make the game steadily working under the "wine" (winehq.com). But the latter would be less desirable than the release versions of games for Linux. If you use a cross-platform libraries such as GTK or QT (desktop KDE), then release and support of the game engine will require a minimum of work, since for all os will be used by one common version of the code ..
And it's better to make the game cross-platform game engine, and open source (GPL). License for game resources can be arbitrary. But if we have collected a lot of money, it would be true if you release a game resources under an open license.

PC Exclusive = More Control.
I would stay away from Apple and even Droid. Apple is the very existence of evil all they care about is cold hard cash and control NOT their customers and I believe it should be clear by now that they do not give a crap about gamers.
And I guess why not Linux but the PC Windows platform is far from dead.

Some people coming here to ask for Linux support are willing to accept the game to run well on Wine, which you can not call an actual Linux support. It's either supporting Linux natively, or it doesn't.

The other discussions on the forums suggest that they should make the game open-sourced (without the artwork), which is a good idea, and it might help with the Linux porting, and that idea, may be even taken in consideration by Linux supporters over the the Wine idea.

Sort of offtopic: I think this thread is going towards "Linux platform", rather than "Wasteland 2 Platforms", maybe we should start a new thread, where we can conceal all the Linux related recommendations, possible solutions and so on.

LE: There already is such a thread

Sure, because nobody talk about consoles here, Windows support is decided, MacOS support is promised under condition, now we expect to see official announcement about Linux support and talk about it here. Steam and Desura topic is background, but I hope if Linux support will be official then we can expect Wasteland 2 beta on Desura. Fallout 1 for Linux is already available on Desura: http://www.desura.com/games/fallout

Why is anyone still running windows 98? And why would scarce development dollars be spent so that 117 people who still insist on running this system can play the game?

the idea is not to go out of the way to support an odd plat form. The idea is to make wide support format that is optimized to run on damn near any thing with no specializing

I vote for Linux version, since I do not use Windows for several years already.

I believe that there is a bunch of cross-platform engines (e.g. Unigine) and libraries (openal, glut) available. If development starts with a cross-platform approach in mind - it will be much easier/less expensive than to port Win-only stuff. Moreover, MacOS and Linux have a LOT in common, so a working MacOS port using OpenGL is almost a working port for Linux.

Open codebase is a good idea, since community might take part in its porting.

I would love to see a Linux version of Wasteland 2 and immediately be backing in a higher tier, if a proper Linux version was announced, that would come along upon reaching a specific funding target.

Wine is not an option for me.
