In any event, I do not see the funding of W2 as any sort of "contest" with Double Fine (nor am I implying you do :)). I think this is a very promising start in its own right, another 10K pledged since my previous message (541K at this point), so the project seems to be ticking along nicely as we're nearing the end of the first day.

Yeah, I was just looking at the numbers because I was hoping to sort of guesstimate how much the WL2 Kickstarter will finish with, and Double Fine is the closest comparison. I also wasn't paying as much attention to the Double Fine Kickstarter at the beginning though, so any comparison will be better as time goes on. I think it's pretty clear that the funding goal is going to be met, and if there's any comparability with Double Fine at all, probably at least the 1.5 million goal to port to OSX too. (Not to count the chickens before they're hatched or anything).

Aha these are interesting:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/02/13/graph ... 6-million/

Shows that higher rewards were more popular at the start of DF's.

And

https://sites.google.com/site/jansenjfa/DF_predict.jpg

Which was done on like day 7 but proved fairly accurate (with another spike at the end, I reckon) seems to indicate 2 days of heavy funding followed by a fairly constant but slower stream afterwards.

Of course they're different projects but they're similar in many ways and it's the only similar thing we've got to go off so it's interesting to look.

That second graph would indicate we may see full funding reached tomorrow if we follow the 2 day pattern.

Very interesting information (and in the meantime DF doubled the sum on which the excellent PCG graph is based) and very reasonable arguments.

For me, the closing sentence of the PCG article says it all:

"Again, it’s an incredible show of support for some heroes of PC gaming, and a genre most publishers won’t touch."

It's a great feeling being able to actively -and quite practically- support a project you feel strongly about, but it's equally important that we're sending a message here to the publishers as well. Though, as I said earlier, a second resounding success of such a project may very well reshape for good the way games are funded.

I supported Double Fine as well I am supporting Wasteland 2, and I hope that the latter will be a huge success as the former proved to be. I really hope the game industry as a whole will take notice.

That said, I am a bit worried today about Wasteland 2. I do think it will be funded, but I also worry that if it does not reach $3-4 M it could be perceived as a ‘half-success’. I thought that this project, also given the Fallout influence, would be more popular than DF. I fear that this could be perceived as ‘saturation’. That is, yes there is a significant amount of ‘crazy’ people who wants to fund old-school games, but they are not enough for several projects per year.

We’ll see, but I now doubt W2 will reach $1.6M in 2 days as DF did.

I just read that DF got half it's funding in the first day. If so and I'd WL2 follows then we'll be well above the 900k requirement which is my only concern. To me, reaching 900k and getting the game made is a massive success - anything else would be gravy but I'll be totally happy if that happens. And I hope it happens soon so I can relax! ;)

EDIT: although this contradicts the figures in the second graph above.. These were all just things I saw on the net though so who can say how accurate any of them are.

Well, looking at those figures it seems like Wasteland 2 will not be as popular as Psychonauts 2. But I think that it will reach the 1.5 million Brian set as the optimal number. Reaching 900k would be enough but not good. First of all Brian would have to chip in with 100k which sounds like a considerable risk. Also there would be no buffer if something unplaned would happen. But I'm sure that we will hit the 1mio by today and at least 500k will pour in until the end of operation 'Successor".

Well I wouldn't compare directly DF and WL2.

DF was first and although many of us want to play another great P&C adventure (i pledged $15 to DF), I think that what motivated people to give money for such a game was the idea behind it and in my opinion it is that we can help developers to really express themselves and show how talented they are without constrains.

I adore P&C adventures, but I pledged $250 for WL2 as I absolutely adore cRPGs and I lost hope that we will ever again get a chance to get a cRPG of old times...

I really lost all the hope... All the new AAA titles lacks that intensity, complexity, mood, settings, of old cRPGs... I find myself not bothering with any new RPG but replying BG, IWD, PT, FO12, Ultima, Wizardry, .....

Now I have something to look forward to.

That said, I don't think that WL2 will make a same success as DF (but I have my all hopes it will), but I think it is reasonable to believe WL2 to get $1.5 mil.

Let's hope.

We've just entered day 2 of the project, with 580K+ pledged from 10,000+ backers from day 1. Not a bad start, I would say :)

Indeed. And not only that...but we're all going to be so broke from supporting the games we actually want that we won't be paying into the cheesy schlockfests the bigger companies are dishing out. Mass Effect 3? Yeah, sorry. My money has found a different home.

DF hit it's funding (400k) in 8 hours. It hit 1 million in 24 hours.

I agree. While the comparisons to DF are inevitable, it's important to realize that DF was by FAR the fastest/biggest kickstarter to date. When it hit 1 million, it was one of only two 1million+ projects on the site, and there are still only three total. Plus, it's almost 2 million above the project with the second-most funding. 500k in a day is exceptional.

What is encouraging is DF didn't wane after that first day. It ended up making 3x the first day by the end. That would mean reaching the 1.5 milestone for W2. Mac users rejoice :)

Now for a very important question. I really need to know this.

Will the W2 survival kit be shipped before 12/21/12?

I was refreshing the Kickstarter page (it's almost hypnotic, watching those little black figures steadily climbing...) when there was a sort of a spike, I checked the tiers and another 10k backer had been added to the list.

This is a great experience, just watching people getting behind this project. I get the feeling we'll be talking about these projects (DF and W2), how they became reality and how we became part of gaming history, for years to come.
