Yeah, looks pretty... "alien". Maybe it's some SKYNET / CYBRID language-code that the Machines have printed onto their units?

I'm not familiar with the robots from WL1, so for all I know they're all from Vault Zero or they were some kinda worker-bots that were sitting around and then evolved guns after the apocalypse. That said, unless they are being actively produced or maintained, you'd think that they'd eventually run out of ammo or at least have varying degrees of ammo left... unless they were stocked up prior to the apocalypse.. designed for it even...

Also, I hope (well, "hope" is the wrong word) that the tail can move around, so that maybe the Scorpitron can really get the "high ground" with its tail gun -- meaning that any nearby cover is basically useless. Hell, I hope bullets go through crappy walls/cover too -- but that's probably for someone to talk about in a different thread.

Looks like it has 3x miniguns and some other sort of weapon too. I'm not familiar with what it had in WL1...

</rampant-speculation>

EDIT: As with [everyone?] else, I'm also looking forward to seeing nature retaking parts of the landscape. Maybe seeing a dead landscape could be a sign that you're walking into irradiated areas (even if you don't have a Geiger counter)

Can anyone who's played WL1 give the background on the Scorpitron? who designed and made them? purpose?

The massive Scorpitron, a tank with an armored warrior, is by far the deadliest robot the Desert Rangers will have to face in post holocaust Las Vegas. With an automatic tail-mounted cannon, tons of armor and significant resistance, it can destroy an unprepared party in just a few turns. Unprepared Rangers will not survive.
It is recommended to engage the Scorpitron at maximum distance and pelt it with rockets, laser arms and other high end weaponry to wear down its armor and blow it to kingdom come.

In other words, it was death.

looks like it, never played the original, but if V2 is going to be deadlier, then a party will have to have the best weapons and armour in the game to even stand a chance, not sure if I'm looking forward to taking that monstrosity on, or probably turn tail and flee :!:

I will wait for the pilot to go take a leak, and steal it! Establishing Ranger domination in the area will then be a piece of cake (Join! Die! Join! Die!). HELL YEAH!

The whole picture surely looks great, if the game have the same atmosphere, it will be awesome.

(Am I the only one to see GITS influence there? Looks like the W1 scorpitron had tracks. Looks cooler like that though)

The green and shrub-filled cityscape reminds me of the history channel's 'Life After People'. I hope the dev's take a few leaves out of their book, they had some really interesting ideas about urban decay and the weird and wacky ways animals might evolve after humans are taken out of the picture.

I agree. That show had some really cool looking ruined cityscape images.

I hope, like the original, it's placed in a very key tactical position and significantly outlevel the area it is in. Having to avoid Scorpitron for half the game and being able to come back for revenge was a large part of the original's charm.

Well, I think the original Wasteland is old enough that we can spoil the game, so uh...

From what we know, the Scorpitrons were created in the advanced robot construction facilities in Base Cochise as a front line of sorts in the quest of the rogue AI there to wipe out humanity. I'm assuming that before this they were being used as some sort of military prototype for the Army.

Nice image. It reminded me of something I had seen in an old computer magazine years ago, so I started looking through them until I found an advertisement for a game called Fire Ant for the Commodore 64. Fortunately, someone had already scanned the page for me:

ftp://ftp.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sincl ... 500183.jpg

Judging by the screenshots on MobyGames the actual game was nothing like that, and I am of course not suggesting that there's any connection between the images. The scorpion is just such an alien-looking creature that I'm sure lots of people have drawn or thought of mechanical ones, independent of each other.

Congratulations for getting to 2.5 mil.Start in the middle of the former US and move east. The Fallout series and first Wasteland deal with the western US so I would like to see different. Van Buren (Fallout 3) moved more toward the East as it went along in the story ( Eventually I would like them to finish up Van Buren) :o

Well, of course to be fair, scorpitron here is more of a nostalgic item rather than something truly creative. Don't get me wrong I'm not undermining wl, but scorpion ,spider ... robots have always been stablished sci-fi concepts.

Extremely intriguing pic. The landscape really draws the attention from the scorpitron, but the whole image is still great and desktop worthy. Really atmospheric. The scorpitron itself looks a bit cliched, but I don't have a problem with that.

I know it's unwise to draw conclusions from a concept art (Fallout 3 had good concept art, for one), but this really does look good and gives me much thoughts about the setting we're going to have.

Good stuff. Once again. I wonder will there ever be updates I disagree about.

What i really want in gameplay terms is that this.... awesome thing, is as tough and dangerous to players as it looks like it should be, as the original claims it is.

I want this to provide not only difficult but nice combat to stroke players egoes - i want this to wipe the floor with rangers, to obliterate them, to make me run in terror!

And most importantly, i want it to be agile, fast, capable of various movements and maneuvers and most importantly able to climb almost anywhere. I want this thing on top of buildings, stalking everything, and behaving as menacingly and intelligently as it looks like it could.
There should be no one inside. It should be an Ai.

Or scrambling down the walls or climbing up over them so the player has no easy place to run onto, take cover and shoot at it from on high.

I want players to run somewhere, think theyre safe and then see it climbing up towards them and be all like "shiiiiiiiiit!!!"

I already liked the Ranger concept art.

But this really blows my mind.

Well... sort of. It was certainly iconic, and it was burned into your memory, but... well... Xenon Laser Cannons were far more deadly, and there was more than one of those bastards.

It was all in the placement. The Scorpitron in the bowels of Cochise would have been nothing except an easy fight, but in the middle of Vegas, when you probably had a party in Kevlar Vests and using SMGs, then it was death.
