Crowdsourcing 101 - Join the WL2 team!

Postby DarkTwinkie » June 11th, 2012, 11:19 am

As we were answering all of the private messages during our Kickstarter campaign, we saw one recurring theme. Fans genuinely wanted to help. Not just financially but we had crowds of people saying "If there is any other way I can give support, let me know. I'm a great artist/sound designer/database manager...."

You wanted to make your mark on the game. We want you to allow you to do this in the best way we can!

If you'd like to help make the game better for all those who have pledged and contribute an asset or 20, leave us a note here. We'll have some members of the team check out your craft and will select some top notch pieces that will make it into the game. If we do this, you'll also be credited for creating assets that made it in the game. Not to mention you'll have some cool bragging rights when the game goes live...

I'm not very good with technical things, but the vision document said you're also looking for writers to contribute. That's something I like to think I'm halfway decent at, and I'd be happy to add to the game. Are there any particular criteria for selecting writers/writings?

Well, I'd be interested in contributing some artwork, perhaps doing some character portraits, or other areas you might want assets. But I suppose we'll need to know some requirements for submission of pieces too, so I can create something of the right specs. Here's a few Character portraits I just did for another project, to show some of my art, but what kind of size, color space, or even types of pieces of art will you be looking for?

I'd also love to help the writers.

I post in several online RPGs as jaxdracon, including some games with Ken St. Andre and Ranger Ben, so they can vouch. Cf. e.g., http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/bluefrogtavern/.

Several years back, I also wrote some WL fan-fic at the HQ-Grid, including http://wasteland.rockdud.net/chronicles/wowmg.html.

My friend and I have been writing P&P campaigns for various games for quite a few years now (Fallout, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green), and these posts really piqued our interest. We've only recently begun toying with the idea of being published or joining a writing team for video games. We'd be very excited to join inXile's writing staff and feel that the spirit of our writing fits perfectly with Brian's description of Wasteland 2's atmosphere. Without further ado:

Delta Green takes the horrors and abominations of the Call of Cthulhu universe and applies them to the modern age. Here is the official website for more info on the P&P game itself: http://www.delta-green.com/.

Here are two "shotgun" scenarios for the P&P game, Delta Green:

Deepwater https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1TAHIlK_tNeNVVXSEFVUzJseGc (the final image is a map of the areas of interest in Lousiana. I'll see if I can find a copy to share separately if anyone is interested in running this; let me know and I'll try to get it to you.)

Here is the beginning of a Fallout P&P campaign that hasn't been fully committed to digital medium (My friend wrote the entirety of this one, and I had the pleasure of editing some and play-testing it.):

Please let us know your thoughts. Sounds like a longshot, but I can think of nothing more amazing than writing with inXile.

Jack of Trades and willing to give anything a try.

Officially, I got a Masters of Science in Computer Science with course work in databases, parallel processing, and operating system design.
Unofficially, I do a whole host of stuff off to the side. Most of it is housed on my website:
http://www.bestwithstuff.com

EDIT: Trimmed it down. Too much rambling.

In summary, I'll give anything a shot. I'm not the greatest, but I'm pretty damn good at figuring things out and making a respectable effort once I figure them out.

EDIT: So, in otherwords, you got a hit list stuff that needs doing?

I have a few ideas for smaller sidequests that i would like to throw out so maybe making a section or a thread for such stuff would be good?
Or..hmm... i could just wait for mod tools and make them myself.... hmm...

nah... ill just throw it out now and then make it myself later - if you dont.

Also, Dark Twinkie, i sent you a pm about something but never got a reply.
Any kind of reply. No problem if its a negative one. I would just like to know.

I'm a student of communication design, with focus on film and video art, so I can't provide much of use here.
However, I also do my fair share of creative writing, esp. short stories and creative concepts, mostly with a heavy stroke of dark humour. So, if there's any demand for oddities, I'd be mre than glad to contribute my mite.

Well, I can write. Short stories, descriptions, things like that are where I tend to excel. Little pieces of flavor to make the world feel more robust.

Lots of writers here. I've always liked writing stories. I could probably chime in with a pitch when I have time. Although, it would be nice to know what, exactly, is sought after, or preferred from that department (or is it basically "anything") - some sort of frame inside which to work on.

English is not my primary language so im not sure i can offer some actually good writing - especially seeing inXile has some pretty good writers already in the team.

I would like to throw out some good sub-quests ideas i have from time to time, since all of this is such a positive inspiration it really gets my creative juices running.

I also have a great idea for a special simple but very effective mechanic, but i would prefer to keep it under wraps so the people here dont get spoiled before time - so it could hit you all with full force.
As far as im concerned i would just throw it at devs and let them do whatever they want with it.
Without requesting anything in return - that includes signing off any potential binding agreements or contracts or anything like that.

I wouldnt mind that idea posted on the forums for all to opine on, except im loath to spoil it, as i said before.
But i would rather have a reply on it from inXile before that, because they may have their own idea about that feature so mine would not be necessary.

I don't know if you're looking for additional music, but I'd very much like to contribute a track or two to the soundtrack if at all possible. Mark Morgan's Fallout soundtrack has had a deep and profound influence on my own music for years now, and some of the stuff I make is reminiscent of his work in many ways, particularly my attempts at dark ambient. Most of the stuff posted below is very drone-like and suitable for the darker areas of a game, such as dungeons, caves and cultist/bandit hideouts.

While the tracks below could be used as-is for Wasteland 2, I could also make new tracks relatively quickly if that is wanted. If so, consider the following to be demos of some of what I can do. A few of these were co-composed by a friend, who will give written permission for their use if necessary.

Overwatch - A percussion-based track, perhaps with a martial bent.
Thunderous Depths - Dark, oppressive drones, hinting at past atrocities and vileness.
Evil Drones - Mysterious drones. Could work well while exploring the bowels of an abandoned ship or lab.
Denizens of the Underworld - Haunting drones, deep basslines and dark choirs. Suitable while exploring a bandit's den in a cave somewhere?

A few others that should be considered nothing but demos. They aren't complete, and would not be used in their current form. Still, they do show off some more of what I do: (titles as unfinished as the music itself)

Spacey2 - A little piece inspired by the X-Com combat music. Ignore the stuff near the end.
Deep Disturbance
Dungeon5 - Slightly friendlier than most of my other stuff, though not exactly joyful.
Creepy - As the title says.

Also, if voice acting should be needed (not even talking full dialogue here, just the mandatory grunts, shouts, screams): I might be able to dub the odd one or two ghouls or mutants.

just ask if you are interested in other artworks or texture designs.

I would love to help out with writing.

Are you just looking for people to post random bits of prose that might be useful in the game, or are you looking for actual work samples to select specific people to help out? I'm a little unclear on this...

I'm doing a PhD in molecular biology, specialising in biotechnology and virology. I'm not a good writer or any of that artsy stuff but if you want to run some of your stories through me that include scientific stuff (biology, physiology, mutations, DNA, biological warfare and such) to add them some credibility I'll be delighted to help. Far too often I cringe at the silly mistakes games and film industry makes in the science part of the stories. And it's easy to correct just by communicating with someone more versed in the topic. Also if you need to write some scientific mumbo jumbo that sounds super smart I can help with that :D

Hi,

first of all english is not my primary language, so please be patient with my spelling and grammar . I am an native german speaker and got an diploma in applied mathematics with focus on financial mathematics. This is surely quite uninteresting but i have strong programing skills in c, c++ or c# and database development. If there is any need in smaller development tasks i could help.

If you use SAP for your business management i am your god ;)

Regards, frank.

I've got some schooling in 3D for games under my belt, and I'd like to put in the effort to help this game.

My knowledge rests primarily in hard surface modeling using Maya, but I don't have a commercial license for it, just a student one. I'm going to work on the assumption that's no good for you guys. But hey, that's why Wings3D and Blender exist. So I'm going to ask a few questions and hope I can bang out a few small things you can use before trying anything big. Some of these might be putting the cart before the horse, call me excited.

File Formats, what would you want 3D assets in? I know Unity supports a pretty decent range but would you prefer fbx, obj, etc, etc? What texture size? Polygon limits for say, a single party character.

I know it's early days yet, and maybe there are no answers to some of those yet, but I thought maybe I'd just get that out the way. Anyways, heres some work samples of my 3D done in Maya and Zbrush.

I'm not terribly good cause I'm still learning but I make some tunes.http://youtu.be/hoQN8yrzml0 So if you want to use them(samples, whole, or parts) I'll be glad to send you original wav files.
