The goddamn Scorpitron.

This could just as easily wind up under both a best and worst memories list. Meandering through Vegas, recovering from landmine damage at the golf course, and suddenly getting jumped by what I feel is a prototypical "boss fight" thanks to the goddamn Scorpitron jumping my party from long range. I was under armed, injured, and low on supplies when that thing jumped me. But I tried to kill it anyhow.

After getting my ass handed to me several times, I just left it alone until I could get back with Proton Axes and rush up onto the frigging thing to take it apart in melee. It's been years, but I think I only had two characters still standing at the end of that fight, and three or four others in critical condition.

Yeah, the Scorpitron :) One of the cornerstone moments in the game, along with the assault on the Citadel :)

I got damn lucky with a Scorpitron.
One Mangler and one LAW, and the tank went up in the air. It was, I believe, the easiest boss fight I've ever experienced in the video games.
Just for experimentation, I made a save backup, and tried again. My whole party went down for at least 5 times before I quit.

Damn lucky.

Agreed - encountering him for the first time was a terrifying experience. I remember being horribly under-equipped for Vegas and sneaking around it anyways, looking for better stuff. He toasted me in an instant.

He was awesome later on for skill leveling though - I'd empty assault rifles on full auto against him, which would barely put a dent into him but raise the characters' skills almost every combat round. Then I'd run away and raise my doctoring skills while patching up the critically wounded party members.

Good times. :D

Haha, thanks! I was reading the thread on voice-acting and how it tends to make things worse rather than better. The sig just felt appropriate. =)

I can't remember what weapons I used, but I do remember splitting my party up and attacking it from many angles before entering combat.

I am always glad when reading other people's discussions of things like the Scorpitron that my awe was not merely a factor of being a child at the time. The first time the Scorpitron targeted my party from like 80' away, I seriously had no idea what was going on, and probably started crying for all I know. LOOK AT IT! IT IS TERRIFYING!

Old World Blues, for those of you who are not completely anti-Fallout-New-Vegas, was an amazing tribute to Wasteland in a lot of ways, even though it still cannot hold a candle to the real thing coming back.

Yeah, wandering around Vegas and going "hrm, what's that robot over there..."

Very satisfying to return when you finally have decent armor and at least a few guys with good AT Weapons skill.

'course, if you went well out of order and shot your way into the Citadel (doable with the assault rifles, although it took a pretty massive amount of ammunition), you could have power armor and the Scorpitron wouldn't be able to hurt you at all, IIRC. You could then hack it to pieces with Visa cards.

Friends,

LOVED THE SCORPITRON!!!! I remember discovering a way to sneak up to within like fifty feet of it before it could detect
my team by using the buildings as cover. I think I might have split my group into at least 2 parties. I avoided the Scorp until I had power armor so that I could have some staying-time with it. Then I would use no weapons and raise everybody's FISTICUFFS skill several points, then maybe give everyone a crowbar and raise their brawling. If it ever got dangerous I'd have them start whipping out their PROTON AXE's, or whatever else they had to do serious hth damage with. Double points for close-combat was a great idea (or was it half points for firearms?).

I remember the first time I stumbled across the Scorpitron. I was coming at it from the east and it started carving up my party. In a fit of desperation, I ran north, into the building I was next to.

Only to be confronted with two guards who wanted a password I didn't have and who promptly threw me back into the meat grinder. That's stuck with me for over twenty years, and I always wondered if that position was an intentional thumb in the eye of the player.

'Playing' with Scorpy was always a scary experience (especially with less than Power Armor).
Approaching from the North or South, the 'battle' began at about 40 feet... Vegas' North border was close, but you had to get through a group of Warriod III's first... from the South, just a lot of Vegas to get through.
Approaching from the East or West, the battle began at about 90 feet... a much longer distance than I felt comfortable with... too many 'misses' and 'wasted' rockets (low skills).

Many of my early games (with Kevlar & Rad suits) use to 'make a mad dash' at it and 'duck' into an abandoned building (about 30 feet away)... from there I'd 'fight with assault rifles' and a few rockets, jumping back in the building for 'healing' and 'rest' as needed... just popping out the door for more fighting. Seemed to take a long time (more 'resting' than fighting), but they'd finally succeed ! Spent a lot of ammo getting those A/R skills !

Heheh I fought it with Pseudo Chitin. Thing got 3 of my party into SER. Luckily I have a damn good Ranger with level 4-5 Medic.

That ended up being my first use of tactical deployment in the game.

Kept getting mauled, often times before party members could fire off a LAW or RPG, so I thought "Why don't I split the party up and approach from two different directions? That way, it's gotta focus on one group while the other can tee off on it without being under fire!"

Never engaged Scorpitron without breaking in at least two parties again and landed way more early engagement kills from there on out.

Having played the game fairly recently, I've discovered that training characters in Brawling early and going melee on Scorpitron actually made the fight much easier (especially if you pool your cash early on and head to Darwin to buy chainsaws). Multiple attacks are a beautiful thing.

In fact, the double XP from melee combat almost makes the game broken, as you're progressing through levels twice as fast, and you're saving all that cash from not having to buy ammo.

With fast enough dodge and high enough armor, I like to use Scorpy as a kind of X-Men Danger Room, honing my knife fight, knife throw, and other melee weapon skills.

When I played Wasteland, I was a kid with a fairly limited English vocabulary. I had no clue what an RPG-7 was, especially since the description where I found them said they were "junk", if I remember correctly.

I'd tried everything on that Scorpitron. Everything! Except for the RPG-7, that is. When I finally equipped it out of sheer frustration and "MIKE DONOVAN" proceeded to blow a hole in that damned walking tank, my jaw hit the floor. Or at least the desk. It was one of those moments I'll never forget.
